Ngaka Matwetwe
About
Ngaka Matwetwe is a South African musical movement of the Batswana people. Ngaka Matwetwe means a great or paramount healer, who through song has been able to both entertain but yet represent a particular type of people. The stories that are rendered in song talk about love for the mystical creatures that the Batswana belief system rests upon, and yet the music has a breath of fresh air with drums and vocals that are evocative and piercing to the soul. Ngaka Matwetwe, through the music known as Boloi or transcended folk, introduces us to a blend of music that has both a classical feel but is also very embedded in African rhythms and simplicity that all can relate to. With piano being central to the composition of his music, Matwetwe, as he is fondly known, takes you through a musical journey.
Matwetwe redefines the typecast of Setswana music as he explores drumming from Central and North Africa and infuses the classical piano as part of his recital. Delivering his music in Setswana, Matwetwe showcases pride and a new wave of entertainers and narrators who share the same ideology.
