Nibelung I

Nibelung I or Nivelon I († between 770 and 786) was a Carolingian count in the 8th century, nephew of Charles Martel and one of the continuators of Chronicle of Fredegar.

Biography

On the death of his father Childebrand I, he took over the writing of the Chronicle of Fredegar which his father had provided. He completed the writing in 768, the date of the death of Pepin the Short and the advent of Charlemagne. He is probably identical to the homonymous count known to have signed deeds for the monastery of Gorze in 762 and in 770. Finally, according to a deed from Saint-Germain des Prés, he owned a villa in Marolles-sur-Seine that he held from his father and which in 786 belonged to a count named Autbert, which suggests that Nibelung died before that date.

Children

No contemporary document mentions him having a wife or child. It is, however, probable that the counts named Nibelung and Childebrand were his descendants. In the next generation two counts are known, who may be the sons of Nibelung I:

• Childebrand II, missus dominici of Autun in 796,
• Nibelung II, count of Madrie mentioned in 788.
