Nicholas Little Bridwell (October 4, 1984 – present) is an American-born novelist, journalist, and publisher. He is best known for his debut novel, The Ties That Bind,[1] as well as his journalistic contributions. He is the Editor-in-chief at Resist Mag,[2] a progressive news magazine; a contributing writer at Plano Magazine, and his writing has appeared in several publications, such as Joss Whedon: the Complete Companion, and Experience Austin and the Texas Hill Country. Other than his novel, which is credit as Nicholas Bridwell, he typically writes under the name Nick Bridwell.

Early life[edit]

Bridwell was born in Corpus Christi, TX to Rickey and Beverley (Murphy). He has two brothers: Kelby Bridwell, who is the Superintendent at Dinosaur Valley State Park,[3] and Murphy Bridwell. Bridwell attended Calallen High School. Even as a young man, Bridwell kept himself busy writing plays, short stories, and poems. In fact, his poetry was advanced enough that he was falsely accused (several drafts were provided) of plagiarism by his middle school English teacher.

Education & Early Career[edit]

Bridwell's first successful in creative writing came while he was studying at Blinn College in Bryan, TX. It is there, in the Blinn Literary Journal, that he published "Lazarus Man", a short story about a neighborhood superhero that was addicted to painkillers. The encouragement from this success lead him to pursue his Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing, which he earned at the University of North Texas. While in attendance at UNT, he worked for the now-defunct MyDallasMusic.com and MyDentonMusic.com. Bridwell was able to interview such musicians as Sean Lennon, Pete Yorn.

Career[edit]

Out of university, Bridwell worked at Panache Partners / Signature Publishing, a publisher of high-gloss coffee table books, and as a bookseller at Barnes & Noble. While at Panache, he was able to conduct an interview with Nada Andric of Skidmore Owens and Merrill,[4] the lead interior designer for the Burj Khalifa. After leaving Panache, Bridwell contributed several articles to Wide Open Country,[5] an online lifestyle website. As a freelance journalist, Bridwell has contributed pop culture essays, such as "Buffy Season 8" and "Wesley Wynam-Pryce: Joss Whedon's True Tragic Hero" to PopMatters.com,[6] and critical essays on The Comics Alternative website (www.comicsalternative.com).[7]

Bridwell is currently a contributing writer at Plano Magazine, where he has interviewed such renowned subjects as astronaut and scientist Anousheh Ansari.[8]

After the devastating shock of the 2016 election, Bridwell founded Resist Mag, a progressive news magazine that focuses on both the successes of the progressive movement and the failures of the Trump Administration. With the "Inaugural Issue" (Feb 2017), Bridwell gained the positive recognition of Secretary of Labor Robert Reich.[9]

The Ties That Bind[edit]

In 2014, Bridwell published his debut novel, The Ties That Bind]', (as Nicholas Bridwell). The book tells the story of a diverse group of families who come together when tragedy strikes their neighborhood. From the Amazon.com blurb:[10]

""Everything's bigger in Texas. Even the Secrets." How many family sagas have you read that include a murder mystery in Texas, an epic romance in Japan, tragedy on the cobblestone streets of Paris, and cliff-diving witchy-women in Mexico? Nicholas Bridwell's debut novel is about five families who couldn't be more different coming together as a community when tragedy strikes their neighborhood. From there, the story branches out into generations as we explore the fascinating lives of a young painter, a French baker, a factory worker's beautiful Japanese wife, and a vindictive mistress who is one of the finest, most complex women in all of literature. The story starts with a man with a severed leg limping through the woods. Where it ends will leave you breathless."
