Nicholas Leonard is an Art + Design Education doctoral student at Northern Illinois University with research interests in creative development, technology, assessment, and open access knowledge and products.

Education[edit]

Nicholas Leonard received his B.A. in Art Education in 2012 from Hope College, in Holland, Michigan.[1] He then received a Masters in Art Education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2015 and was recognized to represent the graduate school during the spring graduation[2]. In the fall of 2015, Nicholas enrolled at Northern Illinois University's Art + Design Education doctoral program where he is now currently completing a pilot study and dissertation proposal with his dissertation co-chairs Kerry Freedman and Doug Boughton.

Teaching Experience[edit]

After graduating from Hope College in the spring of 2012, Nicholas was hired as an Elementary Art Educator by Grandville Public Schools in Grandville, Michigan. He taught there for 3 years, instructing classes K-6 in multiple elementary buildings. While teaching elementary art in Grandville, Nicholas Leonard along with Colleen O'Donnell started an annual Elementary Art Show and also participated in town events such as the Art Walk[3] and other opportunities to publicly display art in the community. Eventually, Nicholas left Grandville Public Schools to pursue a doctoral degree full time at Northern Illinois University where he has instructed ARTE 343 - 543: Art and Technology in the K-12 Classroom and ARTE 383: Teaching Art in Elementary Schools.

Other Professional Experience[edit]

Nicholas has been the Art Education Research Institute (AERI) Program Assistant and Webmaster for the 2017 and 2018 symposiums.[4] Nicholas Leonard has also contributed to the Michigan Arts Education Instruction & Assessment (MAEIA) developed by the Michigan Assessment Consortium (MAC) and Data Recognition Corporation (DRC) for the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).[5] Nicholas joined the project initially as an Item Creator for the elementary visual arts. Later, he became an Item Reviewer then the Technology Lead during the pilot study in 2017.

Publications and Presentations[edit]

Nicholas Leonard has one chapter currently in press for the International Encyclopedia of Art and Design Education in the Curriculum volume titled Art Media and Technology.[6] Nicholas has also made multiple conference presentations at the national and state levels. Nicholas has presented at the National Art Education Association (NAEA) National Conferences in 2017 at New York City, NY and 2018 at Seattle, WA. He has also spoken at state wide art conferences in Michigan (MAEA)[7], Illinois (IAEA)[8], Wisconsin (WAEA)[9], and Iowa (AEI)[10]. Nicholas Leonard was also an invited speaker for an Illinois Webinar series where he spoke on assessment, rubric construction, and digital portfolios.[11]
