Nicholas Sansbury Smith (born December 26, 1983)[1] is an American writer of speculative fiction. He is the author of the series ''Extinction Cycle'', ''Hell Divers'', ''Orbs'', and ''Trackers''.[1] His work focuses on dystopic settings in the near future; in Smith's entry in The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, John Clute comments that "spares no prisoners, of the left or of the right, in his renderings of Americas torn apart by external and internal enemies."[1]

Education and early career[edit]

Smith received a BA in Political Science from the University of Iowa and an MA in Public Administration from Drake University, taking a job with the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, specializing in disaster mitigation.[2][3]

Writing and publishing career[edit]

Smith began his career as an author through self-publishing, building an audience which allowed a transition to traditional publishing.[4] Orson Scott Card recommends his 2016 novel Hell Divers as a page-turner with a "compelling" plot and sympathetic characters, against a background of "violent action that keeps making you look around for Tom Cruise or Dwayne Johnson."[5]

In 2022 Smith became an acquisitions editor at Atheon Books.[6]
