Nick Smith (born 1980) is a contemporary British artist who has exhibited work both in the UK and internationally and has collaborated with various companies including Sotheby's and Macallan Whiskey.[1]
Career
Smith graduated with a First Class Masters Degree in Product Design from Coventry University, before starting a career in Interior and Graphic Design.[2]
After establishing himself as an artist in 2014, Smith has since exhibited work across the UK and USA, and is currently represented by Rhodes Contemporary Art.[citation needed]
Smith debuted his solo show ‘Psycolourgy’ at the former Lawrence Alkin Gallery in Soho, London in 2015 which was a sell-out show. For the ‘Psycolourgy’ show, Smith recreated a number of classic paintings from major artists including David Hockney, Vermeer, Van Gogh and Francis Bacon, reducing them to custom made colour chips.[3]
In 2016, Smith had his second solo show at the Lawrence Alkin Gallery which drew inspiration from classic romantic and erotic literature. Smith’s ‘Paramour’ show combined the aesthetics of modern nudes with excerpts from the literary works of Shakespeare, DH Lawrence, John Cleland and EM Berens.[4]
In 2017, Smith had a third solo show ‘Parlance’ at the Lawrence Alkin Gallery, exploring the dialogue between print media and high culture, and reinterpreting existing images of celebrities and iconic pop culture figures. In this body of work, Smith produced small scale works and used magazine publications as the artwork canvas.[5]
In 2018, Smith exhibited his ‘Priceless’ show with the Lawrence Alkin Gallery, which was a commentary on the results of auctions in the art world, particularly the selling of a Leonardo da Vinci painting Salvator Mundi, which sold in 2017 for $450 million.[6]
As part of a collaboration with The Big Issue charity, Smith designed a limited edition wrapping paper along with David Shrigley, Bein Eine and Pure Evil.[7]
In March 2019, Smith produced 3 artworks which used haiku prose produced by poet Kathryn Carter which was published in The Haiku Times.
In May 2019, Smith’s show ‘Pinched’ opened at Rhodes Contemporary Art, London. For this show, Smith reworked infamous stolen artworks; including Vermeer’s The Concert (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum) and Munch’s The Scream (Munch Museum).[8]
In April 2020 Smith collaborated with Rhodes Contemporary Art to present a special charity Raffle, to raise money for NHS Charities. The winner of the raffle won Nick Smith’s blue ‘Haring Dog’ print. Together with Rhodes Contemporary Gallery, the raffle successfully raised £8,531 for the NHS Charities.[9]
