Nicky Hayes is known for opening up academic psychology to the lay reader. She is the author of over 25 books on psychology and related topics [1]. Her career as a writer began with the publication of her first book in 1984, and continues to the present. She is a Chartered Psychologist [2], a member of the Society of Authors, a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a member of the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Science.

Early Days

Nicola Jane Hayes was born near Maidenhead in 1953, and lived in the area until 1964, when for family reasons she moved to the Wirral. She attended Wallasey High School until 1971, and studied psychology at Leeds University from 1972 until 1975. She then worked as a Residential Social Worker with Leeds City Council from 1976 to 1979, when she left to take a PGCE in Further and Higher Education at Holly Bank College, Huddersfield.

Teaching and Examining

She worked as a part-time teacher of psychology in various Further and Higher Education colleges around West Yorkshire, and in Leeds Polytechnic from 1980-1981, before taking a full-time post at Huddersfield Technical College in 1982, teaching A and O Level psychology. In 1985 she left Huddersfield Technical College to teach degree-level psychology at Trinity & All Saints College, Leeds, and later at Huddersfield and Leeds Polytechnics. In 1992 she was awarded a PhD from the CNAA, on the thesis "Social Identity, Social Representations and Organisational Culture".

She became a GCE examiner with the Joint Matriculation Board in 1981 and also worked with other exam boards for psychology, becoming Chair of Examiners in Psychology for Edexcel in 1997. From 1992 she had been self-employed, undertaking consultancy work with various organisations and with honorary positions at Huddersfield University, and later at the University of Surrey. She was active in reviving the Association for the Teaching of Psychology as a support organisation for pre-degree teachers, and also in forming and supporting what eventually became the BPS Division of Academics, Researchers and Teachers in Psychology. In 2000 she accepted a full-time post in Bradford University, but left in 2003 for family reasons to live in the Highlands of Scotland. From 2005 to 2012 she was an active partner in the Harbour Lights Cafe, in Gairloch, Wester-Ross.She also acted as exams officer for her department during her time at Bradford University, and in the Highlands has been the Chief Invigilator for her local high school since 2009. She became a Foundation member of the University of the Highlands and Islands, and assisted in the development of its psychology degree.

She became Chair of the British Psychological Society's Committee on Test Standards in 2019.

Research

During her career, Nicky Hayes has undertaken research into the social dynamics of organisations and organisational culture, psychology teaching, growth in SMEs, and also into the psychological underpinnings of interactive science exhibits. She has presented at numerous conferences, including the World Congress of Psychology, and was keynote speaker at the International Conference on Teaching Psychology held in St Petersburg in 2002.

Books

Her first psychology textbook was published in 1984, and its success led to numerous other books, see list below. During this time she continued to publish new editions in the Teach Yourself series, and she returned to full-time writing in 2015.

Honours

1985 Honorary Life Member of the Association for the Teaching of Psychology.

1997 British Psychological Society's Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Teaching of Psychology.
