Nicolas Catena Zapata

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Nicolás Catena Zapata, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec [1] [2] , is one of the flagship [3] wines made by Bodega Catena Zapata in Mendoza, Argentina.

The wine is made of a vineyard selection followed by a barrel selection. [[4] The Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from old vines in the La Pirámide Vineyard which surrounds the Mayan pyramid-shaped Catena Zapata winery, in Agrelo. [5] The Malbec is sourced from the Catena family’s Adrianna and Nicasia Vineyards. [6] The vineyards, planted with Catena’s proprietary Malbec selection, the Catena Cuttings [7] are located at different altitudes from 3,000 to 4,600 feet elevation. Nicolás Catena pioneered extreme high-altitude viticulture in the Andean foothills, when he became the first to plant in the Gualtallary district of the Uco Valley in Mendoza, Argentina. The soils in the La Pirámide Vineyard are predominantly clay, and the soils in the Adrianna and Nicasia Vineyards are limestone and gravel. [8]

The first vintage of Nicolás Catena Zapata, 1997, competed in a number of blind tastings against famous French, Italian and Californian wines, and consistently came out first or second.[9][10]

The Nicolás Catena Zapata has been called claret-like and classic in style[4] and has been compared to some Bordeaux first growths. [4] [11] The wine has the capacity to age well. [12] [13]

Historical records show that Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon was the most important blend in Bordeaux during the 18th and early 19th centuries.[14] [15] [16] By the late 1840’s, Malbec, a variety which can be severely affected by spring frost, was mostly replaced by Merlot in the Bordeaux vineyards and blend.
