Nicolette Rankin, formerly Nicolette Moreno, (born January 28, 1982) is an American entrepreneur. She co-founded Open English and Next University. She is the founder and CEO of Arena Education, a one-year program for women that teaches digital marketing and leadership. She was named Top 50 Female Entrepreneurs by Harvard High Velocity Women in 2014 and is a case protagonist for Harvard Business School

Biography[edit]

Nicolette Rankin was born on January 28, 1998 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She attended Glenwood High School in Chatham, Illinois from 1996-2000. Rankin grew up as an athlete, focusing mainly on triathlon, soccer and competitive tennis. She married her first boyfriend, Andres Moreno, whom she met in Caracas on a church mission.[1] The two married in 2006 and divorced in 2013.

In 2000, Rankin enrolled in Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. She studied art, psychology, and business, graduating Cum Laude  in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Psychology.[2] She has worked at non-profit organizations with a focus on emerging markets, and as an equity trader in an asset management company in Los Angeles, California.[3]

After graduating, Rankin met Andrés Moreno in Caracas on a church mission.[1] The two were married in 2006 and divorced in 2013.

Rankin currently resides in Los Angeles, California. She is a three-time EdTech Entrepreneur.[3] She was named Top 50 Female Entrepreneurs by Harvard High Velocity Women in 2014 and is a case protagonist for Harvard Business School.[1]

Open English[edit]

Rankin, along with her husband Andrés, and Wilmer Samiento, co-founded Open English in September 2006.[3] Originally based in Caracas, Venezuela, Open English is an online learning platform for the English language.[1] In 2009, Rankin and Moreno moved to Miami, Florida and created their company headquarters there.[4][5] Rankin starred as "Jenny" in their homemade commercials for Open English.[6]

Rankin served as Co-founder and vice president Product Director.[1] During her tenure at Open English, Rankin raised $120M in VC funding. Nicolette worked to improve student experience and found “a way for teachers to manually route students into online classrooms.[1] In 2013, an additional $65 million was raised for Open English.[7]

Next University[edit]

Rankin Left Open English in 2013 and became co-founder of Next University.[8] In 2015, Next University was acquired by Open English.[9]

Arena Education[edit]

In July 2016, Rankin founded Good University, later renamed Arena Education, with the mission to empower women financially and close the gender pay gap in the United States via a one year online program that teaches digital marketing and leadership.[5] Rankin is currently the CEO of Arena[5]
