Early life
Nida Collado lived with parents Antonino Collado and Josefina Abutan. She grew up in a lower-income household with her parents and siblings.
Education
Collado completed her high school education and subsequently received a scholarship to attend the Palawan National Agricultural College (renamed to Western Philippine University). She did not complete her degree.
Career
Nida is an environmentalist and conservationist who serves as the president of the Macatumbalen Community Based Forest and Management Association (MCBFCMA), located in San Vicente. She assumed the presidency of MCBFCMA in 2002. By 2009, she directed projects in collaboration with both governmental and non-governmental organizations.[1]
Her work focuses on community-based forest and mangrove conservation. This includes organizing local community groups and educating farmers on the environmental impacts of slash-and-burn agriculture. Under her leadership, the organization reforested 1,450 hectares of degraded, logged-over land.[2]
Awards and Recognition
Collado and MCBFCMA have received several awards for environmental conservation and community service:
- 2016: Best Peoples Organization Environmentalist in Palawan (awarded to Collado individually).
- 2021: Gawad Ulirang Ina (Model Mother: HERoes of our Lives) for the Province of Palawan.
- 2022: Best Community-Based Forest Management Peoples Organization – CBFM-PO (awarded to MCBFCMA by the Palawan Provincial Environment and Natural Resource Office).
- 2023: Philippine Resilience Award for climate resilience work.
- 2024: Wangari Maathai Forest Champion Award, presented by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) and chaired by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) during the 27th Session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO) in Rome, Italy.
While Nida was president of MBFCMA, the organization reforested 1,450 hectares of degraded, logged-over land.[1]
