Nigerian Doctors in the UK

History[edit]

NDUK started as a social support group on Facebook by Dr O. Efekodo in 2018[2] and functioned primarily for information sharing about life in the United Kingdom, fun and social networking. Within 2years from founding, the facebook group had grown to over 2000 members.[2] As a social group, it hosted collaborations with other Nigerian medial organisations such as Black Women In Health, Nigerian GPs UK, Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain.

In 2018, NDUK initiated education and training workshops and webinars to support the learning and professional development of its members. Till date, NDUK proudly host annual online conferences such as 'Welcome to the UK' workshop and 'Specialty Training Conferences' for its members. Generally, the Facebook group is interactive and offered valuable support to its members during the COVID-19 pandemic.

NDUK formally initially registered with Company House UK as a Limited Liability in 2020. [3] The organisational structure was updated to a charitable organisation on 06 October 2020 and has operated as a non-profit organisation till date.

Organisational Structure[edit]

NDUK created its organisational structure and legal constitution shortly after incorporation.[2] The leadership structure is made of Nigerian doctors recruited from within the community. Across the United Kingdom, the association is represented by regional representatives and clinical representatives. Regional representatives are doctors who act as social and welfare leaders for NDUK members, while clinical representatives are doctors or experts in their medical fields who offer career advice and guidance to NDUK members. This structure allows for social engagements and professional support[1].

Headquarters[edit]

NDUK do not have a physical location for its national headquarter or regional centres. Most interactions and events are hosted online and allows members to engage and share information regardless of their location.

Membership[edit]

NDUK maintains a list of members who are registered for its formal membership in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR. Membership registration is strictly prohibited to qualified medical doctors and dentists of Nigerian origin, who already live and work in the UK, or intend to.
