Night Demon Band

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Night Demon is an American heavy metal band from Ventura, California. The band is part of the resurgence of traditional, old-school heavy metal in the 2010s.

Night Demon EP (2011 – 2014)

Night Demon was formed by vocalist/bassist Jarvis Leatherby and guitarist Brent Woodward in May 2011. Leatherby was a roadie for the night for Woodward’s band, The Fucking Wrath, when Leatherby and Woodward decided to start a band influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The pair recruited their friend Pat Bailey on drums, and founded Night Demon to honor their mutual love of the NWOBHM sound, as well as classic American heavy metal bands such as Riot. Over the span of their first four rehearsals, the band wrote four songs (“The Chalice,” “Night Demon,” “Ancient Evil,” “Ritual”). On April 22, 2011, the fifth time that Leatherby, Woodward and Bailey ever played together, they went to Satellite Studios, next door to their rehearsal space, and recorded the four songs in five hours with engineer Armand John Anthony. Those recordings later became the Night Demon EP. Night Demon’s first-ever live show was opening for Armand’s local Thin Lizzy tribute band Bad Reputation at the Bombay club in downtown Ventura, California on May 27, 2011. The show was recorded and archived, and those raw live recordings of two songs (“Ritual” and a cover version of Golden Earring’s “Radar Love”) eventually surfaced on the expanded edition of the Night Demon EP.

For the next year and a half, Night Demon played only sporadic gigs in Ventura and the surrounding area. The band spent most of 2012 writing and rehearsing. Drummer Pat Bailey exited in early 2012, and was replaced by The Fucking Wrath drummer John Crerar. The band’s activity level ratcheted up considerably in 2013. On January 28, 2013, Night Demon played in Los Angeles for the first time, at a “Metal Monday” event at the Down and Out venue. In April 2013, the band filmed a self-produced, DIY video for the song “Night Demon.”

The Night Demon EP was released on June 18, 2013 in 7” vinyl format (500 copies) via Reinig Records. Two months later, Shadow Kingdom Records issued a CD edition of the EP. The EP has subsequently been reissued in numerous formats, including an expanded edition that adds cover songs from NWOBHM bands Diamond Head (“Lightning to the Nations”) and Jaguar (“Axe Crazy”), as well as two songs recorded at the band’s first-ever live show. The Night Demon EP was well received by the underground heavy metal press, with one journalist describing it as having a “nostalgic appeal that should lube some of the rusty gears of old headbangers while inspiring newbies that they too can herald the sovereigns of yesteryear.”

In September 2013, John Crerar parted ways with Night Demon, who then retained Pennsylvania transplant Dusty Squires (formerly of the band New Liberty) as drummer.

Live concert milestones occurred in quick succession for Night Demon in late 2013 and 2014. In October 2013, the band performed three shows in Santa Ana, Los Angeles and Las Vegas with NWOBHM pioneers Raven and Diamond Head. In April 2014, Night Demon made their first festival appearance at the Ragnarokkr Metal Apocalypse in Chicago, Illinois, headlined by Riot V and Grim Reaper. Also in April 2014, the band embarked on a six-week, 31-show European tour, including appearances at Keep It True Festival (Germany), Pounding Metal Festival (Spain), and Muskelrock Festival (Sweden). Night Demon was the special guest on Raven’s extensive seven-week “ExtermiNation America Tour 2014” in October and November 2014. During this time, the band’s live shows evolved to include nightly appearances by the band’s mascot “Rocky,” the hooded skeletal goblet-wielding figure from the cover of the Night Demon EP. The tradition of Rocky joining the band onstage during “The Chalice” persists to this day, and is a mainstay of the Night Demon concert experience.

Curse of the Damned (2015 – 2016)

Night Demon’s full-length debut album, Curse of the Damned, was released in January 2015 on SPV/Steamhammer in Europe, and on Century Media Records in the rest of the world. The album was recorded in just three days. To promote Curse of the Damned, the band released a lyric video for the song “Full Speed Ahead” and a performance video for the song “Heavy Metal Heat.” Certain pressings of the album included a cover version of “Road Racin’” by Riot, one of Night Demon’s major influences.

Curse of the Damned garnered many favorable reviews, with one journalist writing, “Curse of the Damned is the kind of album that speaks to the crushing and frankly beautiful power that this kind of music can have. … Curse of the Damned is something of a masterpiece.” Curse of the Damned was voted the #1 album of 2015 by listeners of the WCJU Metal on Metal radio show, edging out heavy metal heavyweights like Iron Maiden, Slayer, Motorhead and Saxon for top honors. The album was honored as album of the year in five different publications, and was listed among the top 10 albums of 2015 in over 30 publications worldwide.

Throughout 2015, Night Demon supported Curse of the Damned via a rigorous touring schedule. Following a three-week U.S. stint with Skull Fist and Elm Street in January 2015, the band launched their second European tour from February-April 2015, including appearances at the Metal Assault Festival in Germany and the Very ‘Eavy Festival in the Netherlands. Night Demon launched a 45-date headlining tour in the United States from May through July 2015, then performed a 10-show tour of Mexico in September 2015. The band organized and played at their own festival, Frost & Fire Festival, on October 17, 2015 in their hometown of Ventura, California, alongside Manilla Road, Ashbury, Visigoth, Savage Master, and others. To round out the year, Night Demon joined forces with Holy Grail for 11 shows in the western USA in December 2015.

Guitarist Brent Woodward parted ways with Night Demon in January 2016. His replacement, Armand John Anthony, had an extensive history with the band. He served as a studio engineer on both the Curse of the Damned album and the debut EP. He had previously played with Night Demon drummer Dusty Squires in New Liberty. And he had played drums for Night Demon as a last-minute fill-in for a show at the Old Towne Pub in Pasadena, California on September 14, 2013.

The new Night Demon lineup continued touring in support of Curse of the Damned at a hectic pace, notching more than 100 shows worldwide in 2016 and early 2017. Highlights included “Final Curse” tours of the United States (with Utah upstarts Visigoth in tow) and Europe, in which Night Demon performed Curse of the Damned in its entirety, from back to front; a slot on the Carcass / Crowbar / Ghoul tour of the USA in summer 2016; appearances at Germany’s prestigious Bang Your Head Festival and the second iteration of their hometown Frost & Fire Festival; and a 19-show South American tour.

Darkness Remains (2017 – 2018)

Night Demon’s second album, Darkness Remains, was released in April 2017 on SPV/Steamhammer in Europe, and on Century Media Records in the rest of the world. The album was preceded by the singles “Welcome to the Night” (with an accompanying music video) and “Hallowed Ground.” A 7” vinyl single for “Black Widow” was also issued, backed with a cover version of Black Sabbath’s “Turn Up the Night.” Darkness Remains was released to critical acclaim from the worldwide heavy metal press, including monthly soundcheck rankings of #1 in Deaf Forever magazine and #3 in Rock Hard magazine. The German Metal Hammer magazine wrote of Darkness Remains, “Night Demon don’t show any weaknesses and anybody who likes Iron Maiden, Jaguar, Tygers of Pan Tang is going to love them. Great stuff!”

Night Demon played more than 100 shows around the world in 2017 in support of Darkness Remains. Highlights included a spring USA tour supporting Anvil, a spring European tour dubbed “Darkness Over Europe,” a fall tour of the UK and Ireland, and appearances at numerous festivals in Europe and the US, such as Ozzfest (California), Rock Hard (Germany), Summer Breeze (Germany), Party San (Germany), Keep It True (Germany), Very ‘Eavy (Netherlands), Pounding Metal (Spain), Up the Hammers (Greece), Muskelrock (Sweden), Headbangers Open Air (Germany), Chaos Descends (Germany), Defenders of the Old (New York), Days of Darkness (Maryland), and Frost & Fire (California). Night Demon closed out the year with a special headlining appearance at the Cleveland Metal Holiday Food Drive in Cleveland, Ohio on December 2, 2017, with the show being recorded for a future live album in front of a packed house at the Beachland Ballroom. That album, to be entitled Live Darkness, will be released in 2018.

Night Demon and Darkness Remains received numerous accolades in 2017. In September 2017, the German Metal Hammer magazine honored Night Demon with an award for best “Up & Coming” band. Darkness Remains was named album of the year in magazines such as Deaf Forever and Rocks!, and Night Demon again earned the top spot in the WCJU Metal on Metal Listeners Poll for 2017.

The Darkness Remains album cycle continued unabated in 2018. Night Demon toured Europe for five weeks in January and February 2018 as direct support for Accept’s “The Rise of Chaos” tour. To coincide with that tour, Night Demon released an expanded edition of Darkness Remains on January 12, 2018, as a 2CD digipak featuring bonus cover versions of “Turn Up the Night” (Black Sabbath) and “We Will Rock You” (Queen), alternate takes and demo versions, an alternate “Bright Lights Mix” of the entire album, and track-by-track audio commentary by the entire band.
