Nik Kotecha
Dr Nik Kotecha OBE DL is a British pharmaceutical entrepreneur, business leader, philanthropist, and academic leader. He is the founder and chairman of Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd, a pharmaceutical manufacturing company supplying generic medicines to domestic and international markets, and the chair of the Randal Charitable Foundation. He also serves as Pro-Chancellor of De Montfort University.
Early life and education
Dr Kotecha was born in Uganda and moved to the United Kingdom as a refugee in the early 1970s following the expulsion of Asians by Idi Amin.[1]
He studied chemistry, earning a PhD at Imperial College London, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge.[2]
Career
In 1991, Dr Kotecha founded Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd from a garage in Loughborough.[3][not in citation given] The company has grown into a major exporter of generic medicines, supplying the NHS and distributing to more than 120 countries.[4][not in citation given]
He has served as a Department for International Trade Export Champion and received a Board of Trade Award for export success.[5][6]
Philanthropy
Dr Kotecha founded the Randal Charitable Foundation, focusing on initiatives in healthcare, education, and social justice.[7] He has been involved in projects supporting menstrual health in Uganda, including a manufacturing plant producing affordable reusable sanitary pads, benefiting over 50,000 girls and women annually.[8][9]
Academic and public roles
Dr Kotecha was appointed Pro-Chancellor of De Montfort University in 2022.[2] He has advised the UK government on trade and innovation policy and participates in regional growth initiatives.[4]
