Nikol Algerdos Kovalchuk
Nikol Algerdos Kovalchuk (formerly known as Ambrazaitis) is a Russian–American mountaineer recognised for her achievements in high-altitude climbing.[1] She is notable for being the first individual with dual Russian and American nationality to successfully summit Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world.[citation needed] She has completed ascents of all 14 of the tallest mountains in the world and has climbed the Seven Summits, which are the highest peaks on each of the seven continents.[2][3]
Kovalchuk is one of a small number of women who have successfully ascended multiple mountains exceeding 8,000 meters in height.[not in citation given][4][5][6]
Climbing Career
Kovalchuk began her mountaineering career in 2019, driven by the goal to test her abilities in extreme environments. She successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 16, 2023. Prior to this, she climbed smaller mountains to develop skill and experience.[7][8][9]
In 2023 and 2024, she completed several climbs in the Himalayas and Pakistan, reaching altitudes above 8,000 meters. Between July 2 and July 27, 2023, she summited four of Pakistan's highest mountains — Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, and K2 — within a period of 25 days.[10] In July 2024, she climbed Broad Peak, thereby completing the series of climbs known as Pakistan's "Big Five".[11][12]
After reaching the summit of K2, she went on to climb eight additional mountains that are over 8,000 meters tall, which are commonly referred to as the "eight-thousanders". Among these ascents were Cho Oyu on October 2, 2023, and Makalu on May 5, 2024.[13] During this time, she also climbed Lhotse. These summits have established her as a notable female high-altitude mountaineer.[2][14]
In 2025, Kovalchuk completed climbing all 14 mountains that are over 8,000 meters high. On 6th June 2025 she summited Denali, completing the goal of climbing the Seven Summits: the highest mountains on each of the seven continents.[8][15][16] On December 15, 2024, she also reached the South Pole Last Degree, which is the final segment of the journey to the geographic South Pole.[17]
