His father was a well-known merchant from Požarevac. Nikola began his medical studies in 1878 in Berlin, and graduated four years later. He completed his specialization in gynecology and obstetrics with famous professors K. Schröder and E. Schröder Rose E. Rosse in Berlin.
After completing his specialization, he returned to Belgrade and as the first specialist gynecologist in Serbia, he began working at the Surgical Department of the General State Hospital (ODB) in 1886. In the period from 1888-1891. works as a general city doctor, then returned to the Surgical Department of the ODB and continued to work as a gynecologist. Since his arrival in Belgrade, he advocated the establishment of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department (GAO), which he succeeded in 1895. GAO was established in special rooms outside the hospital building, in the form of a small delivery room and a dozen beds. The first head of that newly established department was Dr. Nikolić. He remained in that position only until May 1896, when he was replaced by Dr. Jovan J. for reasons still unknown. Jovanovic, the second gynecologist in Serbia, immediately after returning from specialization in Vienna. It is assumed that the shift had a political background, because both gynecologists were involved in the affair over the "false pregnancy" of Queen Draga Mašin. In March 1900, Dr. Nikolić was removed from the GAO ODB and appointed doctor of the Vracar County, Belgrade District. Only six months later, he was reinstated and appointed head of GAO. Dr. Nikolić did not stay long as the head of GAO again, because in the middle of 1901. Dr. Jovanović was returned to the place where he remained until 1910.
With the help of Queen Draga Obrenović in 1902, a new hospital was founded in Vračar, which was called the "Queen Draga Women's Hospital" and to which GAO was transferred from the ODB. Dr. Nikolic in 1903 was awarded the Order of the White Eagle. Dr. Nikolić in the period from 1903-1907 was expelled from the SLD for accusing several colleagues of alleged "uncollegiate behavior."
Dr. Nikolić worked part-time in the newly established Queen Draga Hospital until 1905, when he transferred from the civil service to work privately until 1910. Then, after Dr. Jovanović retired early, he became the head of GAO again, as well as the manager of the School for Midwives founded by Dr. Jovanović. He remained in these positions until the beginning of the Balkan Wars in 1912.
In 1913, he was appointed manager of the temporary military hospital in Požarevac until he moved to Zaječar. During the First World War, he worked as a surgeon at military hospitals in Smederevska Palanka and Petrovac na Mlavi. In March 1915, he was transferred from Petrovac to Požarevac, where he took over the ward of typhus by order, from which he fell ill and died on April 12, 1915. He was buried in Požarevac.
He was married to Ana Nikolić, born Krstić. They had three children: Jelena, Tihomir and Milan.
