Nikola Stamenković
Nikola Stamenković was a Serbian engineer who proposed a project back in the second half of the 19th century to connect the Danube with the Aegean Sea which only now is being considered as a serious possibility.[1][2]
Connectivity of rivers from Northwestern Europe to Southeastern Europe was an engineering dream for many European nations for more than a millennium. Canal digging to connect the Danube and other connecting rivers with the Aegean Sea can be traced back three centuries when Stamenković, a professor at the University of Belgrade, drafted the first plan, and another Serb Igor Eugene Lazarević Hrebeljanović, a director of a U.S. company for waterways construction also fancied the same idea, though nothing concrete came of it. [3][4]The Stamenković project is viable, although the current sponsors have yet to put the plan into motion. [5]
