Nils «Jamie» Hämmerli is a pilot of the Swiss Air Force. He is a professional officer in the rank of Lieutenant colonel and Chief Air Defense (CAD) in militia duty.
Current Tasks[edit]
Nils Hämmerli is working as Chief Air Defense in the Air Force Air Defense and Directions Center at the Dübendorf Air Base.
As a fighter jet pilot, he flies the F/A-18 Hornet at the Meiringen Air Base in the Fighter Sqadron 11 “Tigers”. He has been Commander of the Patrouille Suisse since 1. January 2016 as successor to Daniel Hösli.[1][2] He is also the Fleet Chief of the F-5 Tiger’s.
Life[edit]
Nils Hämmerli made an apprenticeship as an architectural draftsman and wanted to develop himself in the field of architecture, as a friend once again awakened his interest in the flying who he had had in his childhood. He became a pilot at Fliegerstaffel 11 in Dübendorf. From 1999 on,[3] Nils Hämmerli was for five-year pilot in the Patrouille Suisse.[4][5] He was a speaker for the flight demonstration at the 75th anniversary of the AAA in Dübendorf. Nils Hämmerli also drew up the show program as well as the topics for the Air14 Airshow in Payerne on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Swiss Air Force in 2014.[6] He was awarded the "Platinum Award" in December 2014 by the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) in Las Vegas for the diverse flight program with the lively and dynamic presentation of 100 years of military aviation. He was Deputy Commander of the Patrouille Suisse from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2015.
Nils Hämmerli is a member of the Air Force rockband "Supersonic". He comes from Zumikon, is married and has a son and a daughter.
He can be seen in the movie Permanente Luftraumüberwachung ( Permanent Airspace Monitoring ) by his job as Chief Air Defense (CAD).
Types of aircraft[edit]
- During his training, he had been trained as a combat pilot on Pilatus PC-7 and BAE Systems Hawk aircraft.
- In his function as a professional pilot, he is currently flying in the Swiss Air Force following aircraft types: Pilatus PC-6 Porter, Pilatus PC-7, F-5E, F-5F, F/A-18C and F/A-18D.
