Ningbonese Bullion Embroidery is a traditional embroidery craft. Its main characteristic is that it is made of bullion and various types of light cloth, and it often occurs on silk outfits and artworks.

The main techniques of it are coiling and filling (gold and silver bullions), and by utilising the characteristics of the material and the techniques as far as possible, the embroidered products are imbued with a special tactile quality and dimension.

In 2011, it was added into the list of China's intangible cultural heritage as traditional fine art.

However, due to the high production cost, it becomes really hard to run a business with the craft, leading the cultural heritage in the risk of getting forgotten.[1]

How it forms

Here is a relevant poem from a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty; the poem expresses how vivid the poet thinks the Chinese bullion embroidered artwork is.

牡丹一夜经微雨
The embroidered peony seems like,
it has been light rained on overnight.

— 温庭筠, 《菩萨蛮·凤凰相对盘金缕》

Ningbonese Bullion Embroidery is a branch of Chinese Bullion Embroidery originated in Tang Dynasty. After the opium wars, foreign missionaries entered Ningbo and introduced foreign embroidery stitches, and those Ningbonese craftspeople incorporates it into the original one, and this makes the Ningbonese one unique.[2]
