Nini Music is a Taiwanese instrumentalist, songwriter, singer, musician, and producer best known for her unique mix of Traditional Asian Folk Music with modern metal, rock, and EDM. [1]
Nini Music rose to prominence in the Asian folk metal scene with the release of her first solo folk metal EP, LEGENDS, in 2022. On this self-funded and self-produced album each song tells a story of a different Asian Folk Legend or Taoist God (such as: Guan Yu, Wukong, Mazu). The first single off of the album Longma charted on world music charts in Europe and Asia. The success of her song Longma was instrumental in turning Nini Music into a household name in the Asian folk metal genre.
Early life & Education[edit]
Nini Music was born in Changhua, Taiwan. From a young age music and Chinese folk instruments were a part of her life. She became interested in folk instruments from her grandfather who played erhu and watching performances at local Taoist Temples. She began to take lessons learning Ruan and Liuqin at age 7. After several years of lessons at age 15 she began attending National Tainan University of the Arts. At this combined high school and university Nini majored in performance and composition on Asian folk instruments; the Ruan, San Xian, and Liuqin.[2]
After finishing her schooling at National Tainan University of the Arts Nini toured Europe, North America, and Asia in Orchestral and Chamber Orchestral settings. In-between touring Nini spent roughly two years busking, playing shows, and performing in Corporate and Religious (Taoist Temple) settings. During this time she began to modernizing her playing style and music taste. [3]
In late 2018 Nini decided to make it her mission to share her culture and Asian instruments with as many people around the world as she could. She used her interest in underground rock, metal, and EDM and blended it the sounds of traditional folk music. She took to posting her original music and cover videos on the internet and quickly built a large online following. After this she released her debut Album Rise Up with her band G7 Taiwan in 2021 which had folk, metal, and edm influences.
