Nishantha Piyum Dharshana Fernando (born 24 July 1968) is a Sri Lankan Anglican bishop who has served as the seventh Bishop of the Diocese of Kurunegala in the Church of Ceylon since 2023.[1][2]
Early life and education
Fernando was born on 24 July 1968 in Ja-Ela, Sri Lanka.[1] He received his primary education at Christ the King College, Tudella, Ja-Ela, and later attended Anuradhapura Central College for his secondary education.[3]
He entered the Theological College of Lanka in Pilimathalawa in 1991 and graduated in theology in 1995.[1] He later pursued higher studies in theology in England and India, obtaining qualifications from the University of Peradeniya, Newman University in the United Kingdom, and the University of Serampore in India.[1]
Ordained ministry
Fernando was ordained as a deacon in the Diocese of Kurunegala in 1995 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1996.[1]
He served as chaplain of the diocesan youth movement and later as assistant chaplain, teacher, and housemaster at Trinity College, Kandy.[3] During his priestly ministry, he served in several churches within the Diocese of Kurunegala, including congregations in Kandy, Anuradhapura, Thalawa, Kekirawa, Tambuttegama, Kurunegala, Galewela, Hiriyala, Madahapola, Tambagalle, Hewadiwela, Rambukkana, Kadugannawa and Rathmeewala.[3]
Fernando also served as a lecturer at the Theological College of Lanka in Pilimathalawa.[1]
Episcopal ministry
Fernando was elected as the seventh Bishop of Kurunegala on 17 December 2022.[4] He succeeded Keerthisiri Fernando, who resigned in 2022.[3]
He assumed office in 2023 and became bishop of one of the two dioceses of the Church of Ceylon, which is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion.[2]
Academic work and publications
Fernando has written several theological works and articles on Christianity.[1] His published works include The Bible and Child Sexual Abuse, Exegesis of Psalms 121, and Justifying Infants are Appropriate Candidates for Baptism.[1]
