In the rivalry of Toyota 4Runner's success in the United States, Nissan introduced the Pathfinder in 1986 Detroit Motor Show as the publisher of the year before introducing PickUp. In 1988, Pathfinder was also introduced in Europe under the name of Nissan Terrano.

Where the models in the United States only existed with gasoline engines, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter V6, in Europe also was sold with a 2.7 turbodiesel engine. In the United States, the four-cylinder engine was relatively quickly taken by the model program, but by the end of the model lifetime, two-wheel drive versions were also sold.

In the 1988 and 1991, the V6 models with 95 kW (129 hp) (VG30i) engine were imported by Nissan directly from the United States which were approved and registered individually. In 1991, the modified V6 was introduced with 109 kW (148 hp) and five-door version. In 1995 a new generation of Terrano came on the market. In Australia, however, the model continued for two years in production, even in Indonesia until 2007.

In the beginning of 1999, both the JDM Mistral model and the Ford Maverick were phased out.

Engines

The Mistral had 2.4 petrol KA24E and 2.7 TD turbodiesels at its launch in 1993; from 1996 the petrol engine became injected and the diesel intercooled, with 2.4i and 2.7 TDi replacing the previous models.

From 1999 until 2006, a 3.0 TDi DOHC, direct injected, turbodiesel intercooled engine was produced, using a version of the Nissan ZD engine, the ZD30DDTi, that also mounts the bigger and heavier Nissan Patrol. In the Mistral/Terrano, the 3.0 TDi engine provides much more power and fuel efficiency than the 2.7 TD engines.

The third generation Nissan Terrano isn't marketed as Nissan Terrano III but is called simply "Nissan Terrano" and the model is named Nissan Terrano T20. It is currently produced and sold in many African and Asian countries like Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kazakhistan, Kenya, Russia and other countries. In Europe it is marketed the "Dacia Duster" for the European market where Nissan Terrano isn't currently produced and sold, like it were sold their predecessors. The current Nissan Terrano has a simpler 1.5 diesel engine and 1.6 petrol engine unlike the previous Nissan Terrano models which had bigger engines. It is equipped with a 5-speed manual and 6-speed CVT automatic transmission. It has a navigation screen which has integrated the European and Asian maps and has better A/C controls. The third generation Nissan Terrano has plans to introduce it’s model to be available on European market and also African and Asian states where it isn’t present. Unlike the first and second generations, the third generation Nissan Terrano isn't related to the Nissan Pathfinder, which were together they had many options. The third generation Nissan Terrano has taken many features from "Dacia Duster" as Dacia is part of Renault group and is in alliance with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi.
