Niuzhuang Township (simplified Chinese: 牛庄乡) is a township in the mountains of Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County, Yichang, Hubei, China. It is located at the border of Yichang and Enshi prefectures, and at the quadripoint of counties Wufeng, Changyang, Badong and Hefeng. Niuzhuang Township has 10 fifth-level administrative divisions under its jurisdiction, 9 being villages and another 71 village groups not mentioned here:[4]

Geography[edit]

Niuzhuang Township has 15.6 square kilometres of arable land and 82.3 square kilometres of forested land; 3.3 square kilometres are used for planting tobacco, and it produces 880,000 kilograms of tobacco each year. It reserves 3.4 square kilometres for farming medicinal plants and produce 2248 tons a year, and they also produce 2040 tons of vegetables a year. In 2006, they also had 15,000 livestock heads, 9000 pigs and 6000 goats. Although Niuzhuang Township's average altitude is 1540 metres, its highest altitude reaches 2260 metres within is jurisdictional area; the township government is located at an altitude of 1730 metres. Niuzhuang Township has an average annual precipitation of 1600 millimetres and an average temperature of 9.3℃. Niuzhuang Township has an iconic alpine climate; sometimes locals colloquially refer to it as 'Yichang Tibet' because of its extraordinary altitudes and weather.[citation needed] Niuzhuang Township experiences frost 40% of the year on average. Niuzhuang Township has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate.[5]

30% of the village groups in Nizhuang Township do not have road access because they are so remote; they often have to adapt to other, dangerous methods of travel because of the altitude differences. Niuzhuang Township has 110 kilometres of highway mileage. In 2017, the township's power line was significantly updated, which gave all households in Nizhuang Township electricity. Niuzhuang Township also has a power station project generating 18,800 kilowatts of electricity, including one reservoir and five power stations. 99% of Nizhuang Township's children continue in non-compulsory education. meaning one child will drop out of school every year.[5]

The main supplies exported from Niuzhuang Township are bulk medicinal materials, tobacco leaves, Gastrodia elata and a variety of vegetables. In 2006, Niuzhuang Township achieved a total income of 29 million yuan, which was an increase in 10% from the previous year; per capita, each farmer (agriculturally employed) earned 2013 yuan.[5]
