Nkombo Island (also known as Gombo Island, is the largest Rwandan island in Lake Kivu, situated in the southern part of the lake within Rusizi District, Western Province.[1] A channel, less than 250 metres at its narrowest point, separates it from the eastern, Rwandan shore of the lake. The island is approximately 9 km (5.6 mi) in length with a maximum width of 2.5 km (1.6 mi).
The Democratic Republic of the Congo–Rwanda border passes to the north, separating it from Imbinja island, and to the west and south.
Demographics
According to the 2022 Rwanda Population and Housing Census, Nkombo sector had a population of 18,637 inhabitants.[2] The inhabitants of Nkombo Island speak Mashi (also called Amashi), a language distinct from Kinyarwanda that is more closely related to languages spoken in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.[3]
