No Good (born 1986) is an American musician, music producer, vocalist, DJ, guitarist, mixing engineer, mastering engineer, communications engineer, signal processing engineer, and avid cat owner.[1] musician and social media personality. He started professionally releasing music in 2018 and created social media accounts on twitter, Instagram, SoundCloud, and twitch to stay in touch with his fans and share insight into his production work. He is driven to make new music that is unique and differs from what is out there right now through a juxtaposition of musical elements.[2]
Early life and education[edit]
Born and raised in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii he started playing the piano, guitar and constantly writing new songs starting at a young age. As the son of a first chair violinist / classical pianist who’s brothers were Broadway musical singer/actors he has always been involved in music. Over time he has moved from performing and writing traditional band based music to electronica. He has been in music performance scene for over 17 years.[3] He has been part of numerous jazz bands, a few punk rock bands, has had his own EDM radio show in Idaho called Harmonic Drive, and has been the resident DJ in CJ’s, the biggest nightclub in Idaho. He did two years of school in music at the University of Hawaii at Hilo before moving to Idaho to get his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering. He then moved to Phoenix Arizona to get his masters and PhD in Electrical Engineering.[1]
Career[edit]
His debut release under the moncier "No Good" was a song called "H3LP" with Uninvented Records.[2] This single came about based on his desire to simplify the song making process, to creatively confine his productions and ideas so that the results were more focused, and to increase his productivity by making a song a day. H3LP has subtle juxtapositions that take different key elements from various genres and place them together in a cohesive way. Rather than being radical and drawing your attention, they are meant to be subtle and blend in. H3LP was meant to give the feeling of his island roots and reggae to a doo-wop style pop song with future synths.
His second release was a collaboration with KVIII and was released by Eyes On You Records.[4] This was a deep house song that he did with a fellow member of a music producers discord group that No Good co runs.
His third release was a self-released Contemporary Doo-Wop song done using Horus_Music as a distributor.[5] As described in the information section on soundcloud:
"Darling Angel started out as an throwback doo wop song with lo-fi instruments and mastering to match the music of the 40's. After further thought though, based on the success of the juxtaposition achieved in some of his other works, No Good decided to move the song into a modern format and call it "Contemporary Doo-Wop".
The song is set to be bass heavy on purpose to give the feeling of a mix of reggae and 808's and heartbreak. On top of that there is a very punchy kick to help move the song a long and add some edge to the rhythm. The synthesizers are meant to be very sweet and candy like and take the place of the piano and guitar heard in traditional doo wop era songs that are not purely acapalla. The harmonies of the group are added through a vocoder to keep the song more modern sounding and the sound effects are meant to reminisce of an old soda shoppe.
The track, Darling Angel, is named after the female half of the love story that it tells about a young couple in college."
