Noakhali Rural Development Society NRDS is a rural development organisation based in Bangladesh. NRDS is one of the leading non-governmental development organisations in the Noakhali[1].
NRDS states that it employs over 2,000 people, roughly 50 percent of whom are women, and that it reaches almost a million people with its services.
History
NRDS was initiated in 1992[2] by Abdul Awal at Sadar Upazillah in the district of Noakhali after the development program closure of Danish International Development Agency in Noakhali.
Economic development
NRDS introduced its micro-finance programme in 1993. Micro-finance is one of NRDS's oldest programmes. It spans 6 districts of Bangladesh.[3] It provides collateral-free loans to mostly poor, landless, rural women, enabling them to generate income and improve their standards of living. NRDS's microcredit program has funded over $1.2 million in loans in its first 30 years. 90% of NRDS's micro-credit customers are women. According to NRDS, the repayment rate is over 95%. NRDS started community empowerment programmes back in 1992 in Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni.
Marginalized people, especially women, from families in poverty are partners in NRDS's micro-finance program. The program has reached institutional self-sustainability to continue micro-finance as one of the tools for income and employment generation. A total of 72,000 families are reached by the organization by 2017[4].
Education
NRDS facilitates enrolment of children from disadvantaged families in formal or non-formal schools in remote char areas. NRDS is facilitating 4 community schools[5] established by the community in the coastal areas of Noakhali, aiming at developing children's learning approach to achieve quality primary education for all.
A multilevel campaign and advocacy to build the capacity of civil society initiatives at local level to national level is underway to achieve quality primary education for all. NRDS conducts studies on the educational situation and publishes people’s reports as an advocacy tool.
Public health
NRDS started providing public healthcare in 1996 with an initial focus on curative care through paramedics and a self-financing health service. The programme went on to offer integrated health care services. NRDS is constructing its own Free Health centre in Noakhali, due to open in December 2023.
Disaster relief
NRDS responded to COVID-19, which affected Noakhali in April 2020. NRDS distributed emergency relief materials, including food, and provided medical equipment like Oxygen concentrators for ICUs. NRDS is now focusing on its Health Centre for the underprivileged population.
Partnership with the POSCO Group & PHP Group
NRDS has a collaboration with POSCO & PHP Group’s shelter for homeless and underprivileged communities in Noakhali[6]
Donors
In 1992 NRDS received donations from Danish International Development Agency DANIDA.
