Noise psych (from noise and psychedelic) is an experimental genre of music started by the Vancouver-based band SeeThruoo (STZ) in 2023. It blends the improvisational and experimental aspects of psychedelic music and the purposely disruptive elements of noise music into a paradoxical blend of rhythmic, multi-instrumental, and oblique sounds. Noise-psych is derived from psychedelic, noise, and experimental styles of music. All genres have a long and rich history.
Style[edit]
Noise psych combines many of the elements of their stylistic predecessors and brings in contemporary ontological shifts within the playing and experiencing of sound. Choosing to call it sound as opposed to music distinguishes the approach from traditional Western notions of music as enjoyable to other perspectives on sound as something to experience. Noise psych, much like noise or experimental music, is much less of a popular genre and often attracts followers who appreciate the complex messiness of experimentation, improvisation, and disruptive sounds within peculiar scales or time signatures.
One distinguishing feature with noise-psyche is how it decolonizes Western sound.
Key characteristics[edit]
- No boundaries: defies categorization, encouraging a freeform and exploratory approach to music-making.
- Sound exploration: considers sound malleable and flexible, while also purposely contests traditional notions of what “sounds good.”
- Mixed-methods: Artists within this space may experiment with unconventional instruments, electronic effects, and various production techniques to create a unique and avant-garde sonic experience.
