Nomi Epstein
Nomi Epstein (b. 1978) is composer, pianist, and curator based in Chicago, IL. She is the director of the experimental music ensemble a.pe.ri.od.ic and plays in the NbN Trio.
Early life and education
Epstein was born in Cambridge, MA.[1] She received her BA in music composition from Barnard College at Columbia University (2000) where she studied with Fred Lerdahl. In 2003 she received a Master of Music in composition from the New England Conservatory of Music where she studied with Michael Gandolfi. At Northwestern University, she studied with Amy Williams, Augusta Read Thomas, and Jay Alan Yim. She then received her DMA in composition from Northwestern in 2008.
Her works have been performed at Millennium Park in Chicago,[2] the Ear Taxi festival,[3] Cafe Oto in London[4]. Her conceptual opera Translation was commissioned by The Industry in 2015 at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, CA.[5] In 2010, Epstein founded a.pe.ri.od.ic, an ensemble dedicated to the performance of experimental music in the post-Cage tradition.
Epstein has curated music festivals devoted to the music of Wandelweiser,[6][7] Galina Ustvolskaya,[8] and John Cage.[9][10] She has written on the phenomenology of fragility in new music.[11]
