Norbert Matsché (born 1942) is an Austrian chemist. He was Professor for Chemistry and Biology of Water at the Institute for Water Quality and Resource Management (IWR) at the TU Wien from 1995 until his retirement in 2007.[1] From 1 January 1999 to 31 December 2003, he was head of the institute and responsible for its progress. [2]

Life

Norbert Matsché entered the Bundesrealgymnasium Mödling in September 1952, where he passed the final school examinations with distinction on 7 July 1960. In the autumn of 1960, he began his studies in technical chemistry (Technische Chemie) at Technische Hochschule in Vienna (today: TU Wien) and graduated on 13 December 1965. During this time he worked as a work experience student in the laboratories of Farbenfabriken Bayer AG (Leverkusen, Germany), Aslan Cimento Fabr. (Darica, Turkey) and Semperit (Traiskirchen, Austria). From 1 January 1966 to 31 July 1971 he was employed as a university assistant at the Institute for Biochemical Technology and Microbiology at TU Wien (Director: R. Brunner). After the approbation of the dissertation "Studies on the continuous fermentation of tyrothricin"[3][4] he received his doctorate in "Doctor of Technical Sciences" (Dr.techn.) from TU Wien on 27 June 1969.

From August 1969 to August 1970, he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Environmental Systems Engineering Department of Clemson University, South Carolina, USA (Chairman: J. F. Andrews).[5]

From 1 August 1971 he worked as a university assistant at the Institute of Water Quality and river engineering (with respect to the landscape) at TU Wien (Director: W. v. d. Emde). With a thesis on "Microbial Denitrification in Wastewater Treatment"[6] he habilitated in 1979, and by 3 December 1979 he was authorised to teach as a university lecturer in "Chemistry and Biology of Water and Wastewater".

In October 1995, Matsché was appointed Professor of Chemistry and Biology of Water at the Institute for Water Quality and Waste Management (today: Institute for Water Quality and Resource Management) of TU Wien, a position he held until his retirement from active service on 30 September 2007.[7]

Work and achievements

Within the scope of his work at the Institute for Water Quality and Resource Management, Matsché was active in a wide range of fields of activity. His early work dealt with the biological basis of nitrogen removal[8]from wastewater through the process of simultaneous nitrification/denitrification, which was researched and applied at the Vienna-Blumental wastewater treatment plant.[9][10][11][12] Later, work was added in the field of chemical/biological removal of phosphorus compounds[13] from wastewater.[14][15][16][17] The impact of nutrient inputs on surface waters, e.g. via the Wulka into Lake Neusiedl, also forms one of his early research interests.[18]

Matsché's later research activities include the focus on "Processes of aerobic and anaerobic biological purification of municipal and industrial wastewater" in terms of process engineering[19] and microbiology,[20] as well as "chemistry in water quality management".[21][22][23]

It also extended to work in the area of prevention or control of bulking sludge,[24] floating sludge or foaming events at sewage treatment plants[25][26][27] and the prevention of odour problems caused by microorganisms and chemical substances (especially sulphur compounds),[28] as well as the area of sewage sludge treatment.[29] The analysis of waste water ingredients also formed a cornerstone of his research activities.[30]

Based on his research in the field of biological wastewater treatment, Matsché developed solutions to problems in wastewater treatment and also obtained patents for two processes that were later successfully used in practice. These patents are: First (jointly with Guan Liang): Patent AT 396684 B "Activated sludge process for the purification of wastewater" ("hybrid process"), filed on 6 August 1991.[31] This is a two-stage process for the biological purification of wastewater. Part of the activated sludge from the first treatment stage is transferred to the second stage and part of the activated sludge from the second treatment stage is transferred to the first stage, resulting in the formation of mixed biocoenoses in both treatment stages. Thus, both denitrifying biomass from the first stage enters the second stage and nitrifying biomass from the second stage enters the first stage. This means that in both stages, in addition to the degradation of carbon compounds, the removal of nitrogen compounds can take place through nitrification and denitrification. The mode of operation of several large sewage treatment plants, e.g. Vienna, Knittelfeld, Saalfelden etc., are based on this principle.[32] The second patent concerns a process for the treatment of waste water containing readily degradable or readily adsorbable substances, such as waste water from food industry (e.g. dairies), and is entitled "Verfahren und Anlage zur Behandlung von Industrieabwässern". It has been registered and published under patent number EP1342698A1 since 10 September 2003.[33] An example of the application of this process is the Bad Vöslau wastewater treatment plant into which a large dairy discharges.[34]

Matsché is active in numerous national and international relevant non-university organisations and scientific committees, e.g. in specialist groups of the Austrian Water and Waste Management Association (ÖWAV - Österreichischer Wasser- und Abfallwirtschaftsverband), and he is a member of the Society of Austrian Chemists (GÖCh - Gesellschaft Österreichischer Chemiker).[35]

At the international level, his membership in the German Chemical Society (GDCh - Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker), in various working groups and technical committees of the German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA - Deutsche Vereinigung für Wasserwirtschaft, Abwasser und Abfall),[36][37] in the German Expert Council for Environmental Technology and Infrastructure (dex - Deutscher Expertenrat für Umwelttechnologie und Infrastruktur),[38][39] his board membership in the "European Technical and Scientific Committee" (ETSC) of the European Water Association (EWA) and his membership in the board of the Specialist Group on Design, Operation and Costs of Large Wastewater Treatment Plants of the International Water Association (IWA) can be mentioned.[40]

Matsché was involved in the training of sewage treatment plant personnel, especially in the context of projects from 2003-2008 with the aim of transferring knowledge to countries in Eastern Europe: In the summer of 2003, under his leadership, the first training of sewage treatment plant personnel was successfully organised at the Makedonski Brod sewage treatment plant (then: FYR Macedonia, now: Republic of North Macedonia).[41] This was followed in 2005-2008 by the EU project DEREC TEMPUS JEP (Development of Environmental and Resources Engineering Curriculum), in which he also was involved in leading position. The purpose of DEREC TEMPUS JEP was to strengthen and consolidate high-quality training of wastewater treatment specialists in Macedonia. In the follow-up project DEREL (Development of Environmental and Resources Engineering Learning, 2010-2014), he worked in an advisory capacity. The DEREL project focused on the introduction of a postgraduate course in environmental engineering at the Ss Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, FYR Macedonia, the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, and the Polytechnic University of Tirana, Albania.[42]

Matsché was also a member of editorial boards of various journals, e.g. Acta Hydrochimica et Hydrobiologica.[43] And he was editor of a number of volumes of the series "Wiener Mitteilungen", see "Works (selection)". For 5 years, from 1 January 1999 to 31 December 2003, he was head of the institute and responsible for its progress. [44]

When Matsché was employed in 1970 as a postdoc with Prof. John F. Andrews, Professor of the Department of Environmental Systems Engineering, Clemson University (South Carolina, USA), Wilhelm von der Emde, then head of Matsché's "home institute" at TU Wien, visited him there. This visit resulted in contacts between the two professors from Clemson and Vienna and laid the foundation for a cooperation, in the course of which an important conference was brought to Vienna. So, the conference of the IWA (at that time: International Association on Water Pollution Research, IAWPR) entitled "Workshop on Design - Operation Interactions at Large Treatment Plants" took place in Vienna on September 1971. This marks the starting point of an an influential series of meetings that still take place today, dealing with topics related to large wastewater treatment plants (>100,000 p.e.). After Wilhelm von der Emde retired, Matsché was responsible for the programme and organisation of this international conference series together with the head of the IWA Specialist Group "Design, Operation and Costs of Large Wastewater Treatment Plants" and a team from the Institute until his own retirement.[45]
