Nordic Forge Inc. is a small, family-owned and operated business located in Guttenberg, IA. It was at one time the third largest horseshoe manufacturer in the world.[1] The company sells two lines of products, farrier tools, and hardware. The farrier line includes horseshoes, nails, brushes, anvils, knives, rasps, nippers, clinches, and various kits comprised of those tools. The hardware line encompasses pry bars, chisels, punches, wrecking bars, nail pullers, pig scales, and cow lifts.[2]
History[edit]
It was originally founded under the name Original Enders by Ernst Enders in Littleport, IA in 1885. Enders based his operations in a few different areas in Iowa and Minnesota before settling in Guttenberg, IA to incorporate Climax Manufacturing into Original Enders. After Enders passed, Original Enders was bought and sold several times until Hensel Peterson bought the company in 1960. Peterson renamed the business Nordic Forge Inc. in 1976.[3] Today, the company is run by Hensel Peterson's son, Jim Peterson, and his son Erikk Peterson.
Nordic Forge Primary Products[edit]
Nordic Forge produces hundreds of products of varying dimensions and weights. Hoof nippers are the best-selling product the company manufactures, followed by horseshoes and hoof knives. The company owners attribute much of the success of their lines to listening to feedback from farriers that use their products every day.[4]
Nordic Forge Internationally[edit]
Nordic Forge expanded into China in 2006, building another factory in Tianjin, China. The company has had issues establishing the factory due to electricity constraints and Chinese government regulations regarding the environment. William Chen manages the branch in Tianjin, and oversees the employment of around 50 employees. The Nordic Forge Inc. factory there manufactures only horseshoes.
The company's vice president Erikk Peterson has also represented Nordic Forge for multiple years by serving on the board as one of three suppliers at the International Hoof-Care Summit, a worldwide meeting in which leaders discuss relevant topics in the hoof care industry, have speakers, and display products.[5]
