Norman Barry Cass was a partner in the London Law Firm of Lipkin Gorman. Norman Barry stole £220,000 from the firm's client accounts and used it to feed his gambling habit at the Playboy Club 45 Park Lane, London which was owned by Karpnale Ltd.[1] He fled to Israel in 1980.
On Sept 14, 1982, a warrant was issued at Marlborough Street Court to extradite Cass back to London for trial facing 21 specimen charges.
In November 1982, The Israeli Justice Ministry agreed to start the proceedings for extradition of Mr. Norman Barry Cass, who was 34 at the time. He was incarcerated for a 3-year sentence in 1984.
The firm Lipkin Gorman sued the Playboy Club to return the stolen funds because at that time gambling contracts were void under the Gaming Act 1845 section 18. The case was Lipkin Gorman v Karpnale Ltd
The case was significant, as it was the first time in English law and it succeeded as a partial defense.
