North American Mei'an Guqin Society

The North American Mei’an Guqin Society (Chinese: 北美梅庵琴社, abbreviated as NAMGS) is a guqin society based in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. Located in Boston, the NAMGS the first and only North American official society of the Mei’an school, one of the most influential guqin schools in China, based in Nantong city in Jiangsu province.

The NAMGS was officially established in 2010, by Professor Shuishan Yu in Oakland University[1]. Yu was officially entrusted to establish the North American Mei’an branch by the Mei’an school in Nantong. Yu learned to play guqin from Wu Ziying, a disciple of Xu Lisun (1897 – 1969), who was recognized as one of the Four Masters of Guqin during the republican era and founded the Mei’an school in 1929 in Nantong. Yu moved to teach at the Northeastern University in 2013, the NAMA has been relocated in Boston, M.A. since.
Routine Activities[edit]
The largest component of NAMGS’s routine activities is weekly private guqin lessons with Yu Shuishan, where students learn the Mei’an repertoire from the teacher, receive comments and corrections, and communicate with their fellow guqin learners. Besides teaching, Yu also dedicates himself to the pedagogical and theoretical scholarship on guqin. He is currently working on a manuscript of a textbook which incorporates his scholarship on the musicology of guqin, a large repertoire of practice pieces (lianxi qu 練習曲), and a collection of guqin scores he inherited, edited and revised.
Mei’an Elegant Gatherings (Yaji)[edit]
The NAMGS held regular elegant gathering (pinyin: yaji, chinese: 雅集) every semester. It aims to provide a platform for communication and performance for both Chinese and overseas guqin players and learners based in, or visiting, Boston area.
Members[edit]
The NAMGS offer guqin lessons to students interested in learning to play guqin. The members of NAMGS study and work in the greater Boston area.
