The North Carolina Film Critics Association (NFCA) is an association of professional film critics and journalists who are based in or write for North Carolina based outlets.[1] The organization was founded in 2012 by Kenneth R. Morefield. The current president is Douglas Davidson.

Since its inception, the NCFCA has given out annual awards that celebrate the best of film each year. These awards have been recognized by established print media such as Variety.[2]

Membership[edit]

All members of the NCFCA must either be established in North Carolina, or contributing to an outlet based in North Carolina. To qualify, members must contribute to a recognized film outlet at least once a month. As of 2021, the organization consists of 55 members, including writers for film-related print media and websites such as The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and CinemaBlend.[3][4][5]

Awards[edit]

The NCFCA Awards have been held annually since the organization's founding in 2012. Awards are given in 26 categories. Nominations are usually announced in the final week of December, and winners are announced in the first week of January. A special award, the Ken Hanke Memorial Tar Heel Award, is given to actors or productions with North Carolina connections.[6]
