North of Albany (French: Au nord d'Albany) is an upcoming Canadian independent film directed by Marianne Farley in her feature film directorial debut. Co-written by Farley and Claude Brie, the film is set to be distributed by Maison 4:3 in 2021.

Set in 2019, the film stars Céline Bonnier, Zeneb Blanchet, and Eliott Plamondon as a Canadian family who run away to the United States. After their car breaks down and they become stranded in the Adirondacks, the family recruits the help of a local mechanic named Paul (portrayed by Rick Roberts) to get back on the road.

Premise

North of Albany features a single mother (Céline Bonnier) who decides to flee Montreal with her two children, including her young teenager (Zeneb Blanchet) who has just physically attacked a girl who was harassing her.[2] The family flees but gets stranded in the Adirondacks, where they bond with a local mechanic (Rick Roberts) who helps them confront the real reasons they’re on the run.[3]

Development

North of Albany was announced on June 18, 2019, when Telefilm Canada revealed three films that they would fund in the upcoming months.[7] On December 16, 2019, the production company SODEC announced that they would also finance the film.[8] In an interview, director and co-writer Marianne Farley revealed that she got the idea for North of Albany after her car broke down while she was visiting her brother in the United States.[5] Calling the mishap a "shitty adventure", Farley wrote the initial screenplay for the film alongside Claude Brie, her spouse at the time.[2] Farley and Brie also produced the film under their own production company, Slykid & Skykid.[3]

Filming

North of Albany was set to begin filming in July 2020, but was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[9][10] Originally planned to be filmed in the Adirondacks, where the film takes place, the film finally began filming in Abercorn, Quebec on October 7, 2020, with the hopes of concluding on November 16.[4][5] To respect COVID-19 protocols and safety measures, the crew had to wear masks, practice social distancing, and receive frequent temperature measurements while working.[11]

Filming also took place in the city of Montreal, in locations such as the Laurentian Mountains, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec.[2][12] According to Joëlle Péloquin, the film's artistic director, scenes and exterior shots were additionally filmed in Châteauguay, the Entrelacs, Lanaudière, and in the village of Abercorn, Quebec.[6]
