The Northern Synod of Illinois is one of the 65 synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the largest Lutheran denomination in the United States.
Not to be confused with other Lutheran bodies, in which the national boddy is called a synod, in the ELCA, a synod is more similar to a diocese or conference in other mainline denominations.
The synod claims about 67,000 baptized members and 140+ congregations[1] in northern Illinois. The current bishop is The Rev. Jeffrey Clements who was elected to serve as Bishop on June 18, 2016 to serve a six-year term as the third bishop of the Northern Illinois Synod. His term of service as Bishop of the Synod began on September 1, 2016, and he was installed by the presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, The Reverend Elizabeth Eaton on September 24, 2016, at First Lutheran Church, Rockford.
