Aaron Lee North (born 10 December 1989), who performs as Northie, is an Australian electronic music producer and DJ. Northie is also the front man in an electro pop band, Airports. He is known for electro house and various other forms of club music. Northie is influenced by pop punk, rock, hip hop and pop music. He has remixed artists such as Kissy Sellout, Naughty Boy, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, New Empire, Coolio, 360, Amy Meredith, and Stanton Warriors. He has played alongside Calvin Harris, Ian Carey, Tommy Trash, Miami Horror, and Breakbot. In December 2012 his single, ""Chase Me Down" (featuring Larneybella) peaked at No. 37 on the ARIA Club Tracks.

Northie's status with his fan base and online following provided a push for raising awareness of his blood disease, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, which benefited fellow patients by obtaining government-sponsored, cheaper treatment.

Early life[edit]

Aaron Lee North grew up in the Central Coast (near Sydney). His father, Don North, is a rock 'n' roll and country music singer.[1] Northie grew up learning various instruments and played in punk rock bands throughout high school. He took up turntablism and computer music production at 15. At age 16 he was part of a hip hop group. In 2006 and 2007 Northie was a finalist in FBi Radio's Underage Sets (under 18's DJ competition).

Vacation records[edit]

In 2008, when producing electro house, Northie joined Bass Kleph's label, Vacation Records, alongside artists such as fRew, Dave Winnel, and The Shopliftas. Northie signed to Jam Music Agency and was also half of the DJ duo Brain Matters, with fellow DJ Benson. Northie toured most main cities in Australia and New Zealand.

Northie live act[edit]

By 2010 Northie's involvement with Vacation, Jam, and Brain Matters declined. Due to remixing and playing All Ages shows with various pop bands he developed a teen following on social media sites, Twitter and Myspace. Northie toured as The Northie Live Act, using a live band to perform his songs: mixing both electronic dance music and pop punk. He then released two extended plays: Lost My Mind (2010) and The Restless & Young (2011). Northie also appeared in the Australian MTV reality series, Freshwater Blue, and had his music played during the first season.

Klub Kids records[edit]

In 2012 Northie reverted to being a DJ and focused on club music again. He signed to Kid Kenobi's label, Klub Kids, and released the single, "Chase Me Down" (featuring Larneybella), in December which debuted at No. 37 in the ARIA Club Tracks.[2] Northie's remix of Titus1 and Sebastien Invarsson's "Feel My Rhythm" was included on No. 1 selling Ministry of Sound's compilation, Addicted to Bass. Northie formed a duo, similar to his prior band with musician Nathan Moss, Airports.

Personal life[edit]

Northie was diagnosed with the blood disease, aplastic anaemia, in his early teens which went into remission after failed treatment attempts. Later Northie was diagnosed with another blood disease PNH (paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria).[1][3] He regularly receives a specialised chemotherapy, Solaris Eculizumab, which provides no side effects and neutralises the effects of the disease.[4] In 2010 Northie launched a video campaign on YouTube – he announced his diagnosis of PNH – to sign a petition for the Australian government to place the otherwise expensive treatment on Life Saving Drugs Program. The petition was successful and the program provides fellow sufferers (roughly 90 known in Australia) with the treatment for free.
