History[edit]

The Norwegian Book Club was founded on 1 September 1961 by publishers Gyldendal, Aschehoug, Tiden Norsk Forlag and Cappelen. The profile of the club was the reprinting of famous books. The first book they published was «Pearl Buck The Good Earth». Nine months after its founding, the company had more than 15,000 members, and in 1969 their number exceeded 100,000. Today[when?] the book club has over 200,000 members. In the 1960s, the club expanded into poetry and "extra books". In 1971 Bokklubbens Barn (Norwegian: Children of the Book Club) was founded. With the formation of the New Books Book Club in 1976, the group began selling newly published contemporary literature.

Bokklubben Dagens Bok was founded in 1984 by Pax and Oktober as a radical alternative to Bokklubben Nye Bøker. After ten years of operation, the club was acquired and merged with Ekstrabokklubben to form Bokklubben Kunnskap og kultur. When Cappelen was bought by the Swedish publishing group Bonniers in 1987, the publishing house withdrew from the Norwegian Book Club three years later and established its own book club in 1991.

While the book club focused on "book of the month" in its early years, in recent years it has developed a completely diversified distribution of new books and films. The difference between Den norske's focus on reprinting and the simultaneity of New Books has also been blurred in favor of a market segmentation that appears to be inspired by Norsk Monitor[no]'s division of Norwegian consumer habits: "traditional materialist" and "modern materialist" , respectively. The market arm of Norsk Monitor also appears to be leading the way in Bokklubben Dagens Bok aimed at "modern idealists", while Ekstrabokklubben offered books for "traditional idealists". The book club leadership likely considered the two segments too small to be financially viable, and may have overlapped as well.

The distribution of book clubs has also been shown to be an appropriate way to identify and maintain "market segments" or groups of readers with largely identical reading preferences. The book clubs Villmarksliv, Mat og vinglede and Kursiv are examples of offerings for niche interests.
