NOT A TOY is both band and tight-knit collective. Branson Hoog [lead vocals, writer, producer], Jeremy Marmor [guitar, writer, producer], Benji Spoliansky [drums, producer], and TJ Wessel [writer, producer, keys, violin] each bring something fresh to the table, all having a hand in the writing, production, and instrumentation which ranges from guitar to synths and even violin. Best friends since high school, they cut their teeth in the punk and emo scene playing gigs across the map. Soon forming NOT A TOY in 2020 and quickly signing to Fearless Records. Recently their song "Nervous" caught a serendipitous hot streak while teasing a brief snippet on TikTok, thinking nothing of it at the time. The track has since become a fan favorite and helped garner them cosigns from the likes of Beauty School Dropout, poptropicaslutz, and Plot In You. Even leading to the collaborative effort alongside Landon Tewers of Plot In You on the ethereal "Soul Slippin."
'PRBLMS' isn't just your typical debut album – it's a raw and powerful journey born from real-life struggles. It's a loud and proud statement filled with passion, urgency, and a whole lot of charm. The early shapings of which began during a stint of particularly trying times for the band, unsure of the future of their careers – at times even considering calling it quits – the album grew to harness those growing pains and embolden them. PRBLMS took aim at capturing the essence of that tension to wield it into creative fuel. With the group stating, “We were all at these different but similar crossroads in our lives, with so much uncertainty ahead, we decided to use those PRBLMS and make them into something beautiful.”
NOT A TOY’s members express themselves via multiple mediums. Frontman Branson Hoog's background in art and design informs his work as a musician and tattooist; creating The Painful Interviews Series -- the only interview series where artists answer questions while getting tattooed -- he's since done interviews with UPSAHL, Jxdn, Royal & The Serpent, De'Wayne and many more. “Our end goal is to create a 'Toy Factory' complete with a tattoo shop and our streetwear brand in the front and a music studio in the back; to create a place where all of our different art forms can inspire each other as we’re working.” Haunted Publications called them nothing less than “a look into the future of music.”The future looks bright, indeed.
