Notonecta paranecta, commonly known as Milky Backswimmer, is a species of aquatic insects of the family Notonectidae, found across North America with its range extending all the way up into the Northwest Territories. The swimming pattern of the backswimmers is where the common name originates, as they swim on their backs. Milky Backswimmer’s colouration is often a light cream colour across the hind wings[1][2].

Description

The Backswimmers are known to have long back legs which they use like oars to propel themselves through water. The body shape of backswimmers is oval, with the backs being more pointed [3]. Backswimmers are a predatory organism which can feed on smaller insects.

Habitat

The habitat of backswimmers is found in bodies of water, usually with dense vegetation [3]. Because of their vast range across North America, the species of Milky Backswimmers have no particular area they prefer.
