Overview |
Context[edit]
The encyclical was written to address the world economic crisis of 1929, the Great Depression. Pope Pius XI also denounces the danger of militarism and the arms race. He denounces the arms race as an "insensate competition"[1] which would ultimately be diverting large sums of money away from the public welfare and would worsen the already tense economic situation at the time. Pius XI begins the encyclical condemning the "frightful increase of Unemployment"[1] and that it condemns workers to "idleness and want."[1]
