Novonesis is a Danish multinational biotechnology company headquartered in Lyngby, Denmark. Formed in 2024 through the merger of Novozymes and Chr. Hansen, the company specializes in producing enzymes, microorganisms, and other biological solutions for various industries, including food and beverage, agriculture, and energy.[1] With approximately 10,000 employees worldwide, Novonesis is a major global player in the biosolutions market.[2] The company is controlled by Novo Holdings A/S, the holding company of the Novo Nordisk Foundation.[3]
History
Novonesis was officially established on January 29, 2024, following the completion of a statutory merger between two prominent Danish bioscience companies: Novozymes and Chr. Hansen.[4] The agreement to merge was first announced on December 12, 2022.[5]
At the time of the merger, Novozymes was a big producer of industrial enzymes, while Chr. Hansen, a company with a 130-year history, was delivering bacterial cultures for the food industry, particularly for dairy and meat products. The combination of these two companies created a new partner for biological solutions.[6] The name Novonesis is derived from "novo," the Latin word for new, and "genesis," the Greek word for origin or beginning.[7]
Products and Innovations
Novonesis develops and produces a wide range of biological solutions, often referred to as biosolutions, which leverage natural processes to solve industrial and environmental challenges. The company's portfolio is divided between two main areas: enabling healthier lives and producing better foods, and reducing the use of chemicals while promoting climate-neutral practices.[8]
Key product areas include:
Food and Beverage: Enzymes and microbial cultures for baking, brewing, dairy, and protein industries. These solutions improve freshness, reduce sugar, and enhance the taste and texture of plant-based foods.[9]
Human and Animal Health: Probiotics and other microbial solutions that support gut health in both humans and livestock. These products can improve digestion and reduce the need for antibiotics in animal farming.[10]
Planetary Health: Biosolutions aimed at sustainability across various industries. This includes enzymes for biofuel production, technologies that break down PET plastic for recycling, and bio-based ingredients for detergents that reduce reliance on petroleum.[11]
Agriculture: Microbial products, such as nitrogen-fixing bacteria, designed to increase crop yields and improve soil health, offering an alternative to synthetic fertilizers.[12]
The company has several sustainability targets, including achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and sourcing 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.[13]
Leadership and Ownership
Novonesis is a publicly-traded company listed on the Nasdaq Copenhagen stock exchange and is a component of the OMX Copenhagen 25 index.
The leadership team includes:
Ester Baiget, President and Chief Executive Officer
Cees de Jong, Chairman of the Board of Directors[14]
The Novo Nordisk Foundation, through its holding company Novo Holdings A/S, is the controlling shareholder, holding approximately 29% of the company's shares, which corresponds to about 74% of the voting rights.[15]
Global Presence
Novonesis operates on a global scale with customers in over 30 industries. Its headquarters is located in Lyngby, Denmark. The company is spread across Denmark with facilities in Hørsholm, Bagsværd, Roskilde, Gråsten, and Kalundborg.
Internationally, Novonesis has a network of research and development centers, application centers, and production sites. The company operates in the Asia-Pacific region and has maintained a research and development facility in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, since the 1980s..[16] While Europe accounts for a substantial portion of its sales, Novonesis also has a strong presence in the Americas and other regions.[17]
