The Novosibirsk State Circus, located at 21 Chelyuskintsev Street, Novosibirsk, Russia is one of the most famous circuses in Russia, built-in 1971, even though originating in 1899 when the first circus booths began to appear in Novonikolaevsky, a village in the site of modern Novosibirsk. At first, there were separate circuses for each family, like the Isaco Circus and the Pankratov Circus but, until 1931 there was nothing connecting them. Since that year, all the circuses merged and created the Novosibirsk State Circus.

History[edit]

The idea for a unified circus began in 1931, after 32 years of lots of separate circuses. In 1931, the State Association of Music, Variety, and Circus was established. As a result, the Novosibirsk State Circus was founded. In 1936 construction for a tent in Lenin street, started, known as Chapiteau, and after a year it was finished. This tent was contemporary; it was installed every summer until 1970. Then on February 11 1971, the modern building started its construction. Since then it has accommodated numerous circuses. In 2006, 314 accordionists gathered in the circus and simultaneously performed a potpourri of folk songs.

Architecture[edit]

The modern building was designed at the Giproteatr Moscow Institute by architects Salome Maksimovna Gelfer and Georgy Vasilievich Napreenko.[1], and designer V. Kornilov. The architectural design of the building has some features that were also used in the construction of structures in many other cities. Such features include covering the circus from a shell - a hyperbolic paraboloid instead of a traditional dome, continuous glazing of the vestibule, foyer, corridors. The arena was shifted towards the exit of the artists, which made it possible to increase the number of seats with direct visibility up to 75 percent. The hall is distinguished by the convenience of the distribution of spectators in places due to specially arranged passages and a ring bypass.

However, the project also had serious shortcomings, in particular, a hyperbolic paraboloid, compared to a traditional dome, is not able to carry a significant load, which is necessary, for example, when performing aerial gymnasts. In general, the technical condition of the building caused serious concern: during a visual inspection of the circus building, it was found that the floor in the circus foyer had gaps, there were cracks on the columns and walls of the building, some of which reached a width of ten centimeters and a length of several meters. In the dome of the circus, there are pockets of corrosion of roofing materials. All this indicates that the supporting structures of the building are losing their properties[2]

The building of the circus did not occupy a leading position in the development at the intersection of the main transport and pedestrian highways of the city. It turned out to be on the “edge”, with its side facade leading to one highway and the main facade to another, crossing the first one. At the same time, the axis of symmetry of the composition of the structure does not coincide with the axis of symmetry of the composition of the opposing building, which is also significant in scale. Due to such ill-conceitedness, the town-planning complex did not turn out to be “expressive”, the circus building remained alone in the ordinary building of Chelyuskintsev Street.

The “visor” of the circus is also inexpressive, not to mention the fact that it is not part of the constructive support ring of the circus cover guitar, but a decorative form “suspended” from the wall, which has only an “aesthetic” meaning in the overall architectural composition of the building.

The building of the circus, unfortunately, did not become polyfunctional, for the sake of which its new architectural and construction firms were conceived [3]

The circus building itself is located on the same line as the Ascension Cathedral, which is also an interesting planning solution.[4]
