Novotel Toronto Centre is a 9-storey, 262-room mid-rise hotel located at 45 The Esplanade in the St. Lawrence neighbourhood of Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Developed alongside the adjacent 33-storey 25 The Esplanade complex, the building was designed in a postmodern style by Matsui Baer Vanstone Architects and opened in 1989.
The hotel is owned by the Silver Hotel Group and operated under Accor's Novotel brand. In 2022, the property underwent renovations and reopened to guests in May 2023.
Architecture and design
Novotel Toronto Centre shares its primary architectural framework with the adjoining residential and commercial complex at 25 The Esplanade. Built simultaneously between 1986 and 1989 by the Avro Group, both structures were designed by Matsui Baer Vanstone Architects with structural engineering provided by Rybka, Smith & Ginsler.[1]
The hotel features a postmodern architectural design incorporating Art Deco and Beaux-Arts stylistic elements.[2] A defining feature of the building is its prominent ground-floor pedestrian colonnade, which forms a continuous covered walkway across 45, 35, and 25 The Esplanade.[3] The two properties are physically integrated underground through a three-level subterranean parking facility serving both hotel guests and condominium residents.[4]
History
Construction and early operation
Groundbreaking for 45 The Esplanade occurred in 1986 in tandem with 25 The Esplanade.[2] Construction was managed by Avro Construction Inc. (a subsidiary of Avro Group), and the 9-storey hotel structure was completed in 1988 before officially opening in 1989.[5]
Initially owned and operated by Avro Group, the hotel property, ground-floor commercial spaces, and subterranean parking garage were subsequently purchased by Toronto-based Silver Hotel Group.[6]
