In the aftermath of finding out that Rose Quartz was really Pink Diamond, Sapphire, devastated, unfuses from Ruby and runs off. Steven and Pearl follow her, and Pearl explains the story of how Pink Diamond became Rose Quartz, and the role that Garnet had in shaping the course of the Crystal Gems' fight to save Earth.

Plot[edit]

After learning that Rose Quartz was actually Pink Diamond, Garnet (Estelle) sits silently as Amethyst (Michaela Dietz) babbles about the implications of the revelation. Murmuring “Rose…,” Garnet suddently unfuses into Ruby (Charlyne Yi) and Sapphire (Erica Luttrell). Sapphire is furious, feeling betrayed by Rose’s deception, and blames herself for trusting Rose. Ruby tries to calm her down, but Sapphire yells at her, questioning the basis of their relationship. Now knowing Rose was a Diamond, Sapphire thinks everything she led the Crystal Gems to do was based on a lie. Sapphire teleports away, leaving Ruby in tears as Pearl (Deedee Magno Hall) and Steven (Zach Callison) go after her.

They find Sapphire grieving at Rose’s fountain, accusing Pink Diamond of staging the Gem war to torture the other rebels. Pearl tells Sapphire she deserves to know the true story of how Pink Diamond decided to become Rose Quartz:

Pink Diamond (Susan Egan) had become bored running the Gem colonization of Earth. When the Kindergarten began producing Amethyst soldiers, Pink went down to Earth to greet them—disguising herself, at Pearl’s suggestion, as a fellow Quartz. After meeting the emerging soldiers, Pink and Pearl wandered off to see more of Earth firsthand. This made her realize that the Gem colonization was destroying the planet’s native life. She pleaded with the other Diamonds to leave Earth alone, but to no avail. Convinced that they didn't respect her enough to cease the colonization, she decided to start the Rebellion using her alias, Rose Quartz.

At first, the goal of the rebellion was just to scare the Gems away from Earth, but this changed after Pearl and Rose witnessed Garnet's accidental first fusion. When Rose marveled over the possibility of fusion between unlike gems, Pearl attempted to fuse with her then and there. Though the attempt failed, Pearl confessed her fantasy: that she was a runaway Pearl who had met Rose on Earth and fallen in love with her. The resulting moment of intimacy between them caused the two to nearly fuse for real. Shortly after that, they met Garnet again.

Pearl tells Sapphire that after meeting Garnet, Rose decided to fight not just for Earth’s independence but for all Gems too. Sapphire realizes the truth: “We thought we were following her, but she was following us.”

Rushing back to Steven’s house, they find Ruby is gone, having left a note addressed to Sapphire.
