Numista is a website containing a catalog of world coins, tokens and exonumia. The website allows collectors to manage their personal collection using the catalog by data input and subsequently matches their swap/wish-lists with other collectors automatically.[2][3] Claiming to have over 120,000 registered coins, Numista is one of the major sources of circulated currency and collectible coin values.[3][4][5][6][7] It also serves as a numismatic index for coin rarity based on the market availability. [8]
History[edit]
Numista was created in March 2007 by Xavier Rogé as Cypraea. It was originally created based on a world coin catalog but it has expanded since then due to the growing community.[9] The resource is currently maintained by its founder Xavier with the assistance of voluntary, registered users who contribute to Numista's catalog of world coins by correction and addition of data.
In 2011, the British website Tax Free Gold accused Numista of copyright infringement for not attributing the proper source of coin images. However, this was resolved in January 2011 after Numista began adding copyright notices that link to Tax Free Gold.[10]
On January 28 of the same year, the website announced it had reached a total of 2,000 registered coins listed on the catalog. According to Xavier Rogé, the name of the website was altered to Numista to commemorate the milestone. The name has remained unchanged since then. Two months later, a forum for discussion was added to the site as part of the expansion.[11]
On March 26, 2011, Numista launched a new section of the website named Numisdoc "aimed to gather knowledge on numistic [sic; numismatic] knowledge and create user guides for Numista by the creation of articles" in accordance with the message of its founder Xavier. [12]
In 2018, Numista introduced a function that computes an approximate market value of coins. Median values of each particular coin date and grade are based on 'coin purchase price' provided by website users.
