Nusantara metropolitan area a.k.a. Nusantara Raya (Indonesian pronunciation: [nʊsanˈtaraˈraja]) lit.Greater Nusantara’ or Kawasan Strategis Nasional Ibu Kota Negara Nusantara (lit. 'National Strategic Area of the Nusantara Capital Region') abbreviated as KSN IKN Nusantara is the official metropolitan area name in Indonesia that will replaced the current Jakarta metropolitan area as the main capital metropolitan region. It includes the official national capital (Nusantara, as the core city) as well as the satellite cities and regencies.

The main area are comprises Nusantara, Balikpapan, Samarinda, and some parts of East Kalimantan. These area is designed as interconnected area that plays significant roles to advance the potentials of each region:[2]

  • Nusantara will act as 'the nerve cells' for the governmental centre area and greenery innovation centre.
  • Balikpapan will act as 'the muscle' which serves as oil-natural gas and logistic steer for East Kalimantan.
  • Samarinda will be 'the heart', which act as the cultural centre of East Kalimantan with the renewable energy resource sector.
  • East Kalimantan will have a role as 'the lungs' by strengthen the upstream agriculture and the natural tourism center.

Responding to the viral news related to the official announcement of Nusantara and its metropolitan area by the government, the Indonesian netizens on Twitter and Tiktok hyped up about the suggestion name of ‘Bonus Sambal Terong’ (the acronym of Bontang-Nusantara-Samarinda-Balikpapan-Tenggarong) as the new name of the capital metropolitan area replacing the former Jakarta metropolitan area which popularly known as ‘Jabodetabek’ (acronym of Jakarta-Bogor-Depok-Tangerang-Bekasi).[3][4][5] But however, the government hasn't released any further regions other than Nusantara, Balikpapan, and Samarinda as part of the Nusantara metropolitan area.[6]

The Nusantara metropolitan area has several major airports, namely the Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan Airport (BPN) in Balikpapan, the Aji Pangeran Tumenggung Pranoto International Airport (AAP) in Samarinda, and upcoming international airport in Nusantara.
