Oćestovo Monastery

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Oćestovo Monastery is a female monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church dedicated to the Holy Martyr Kyriake. The monastery is located in Republic of Croatia, in northern Dalmatia in the village Oćestovo, about ten kilometers west of Knin[1]

The construction of the Church of the Holy Great Martyr Kyriake in Oćestovo began in 1928 because the Orthodox people of the Dalmatian region, and especially the inhabitants of the village of Oćestova, wanted to build a church in the place of birth of the Dalmatian bishop Stefan (Knežević). The church is dedicated to the Holy Great Martyr Kyriake, who enjoys special respect among the Serb Orthodox population in Dalmatia.[2]

Until the consecration in 1960, the Church of the Holy Sunday (Kyriake) belonged to the Padjene parish, and from 1960 it became an independent parish church. Orthodox Dalmatians usually gathered at the council in Oćestovo on the first Sunday after Petrovdan when the feast of the Holy Great Martyr Sunday is celebrated in this church of the Diocese of Dalmatia.[3]

Establishment[edit]

Due to the great importance of this votive church Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Dalmatia, which has already become a place of pilgrimage and worship throughout its history, Bishop of Dalmatia Fotije Sladojević with his decision of 13 July 2005. He declared the Church of the Holy Great Martyr Sunday in Oćestovo a monastery.[4]

Bishop Fotije of Dalmatia served on 17 July 2005 Liturgy of Holy Hierarchs in the temple of the Holy Great Martyr Kyriake in Oćestovo and on that occasion the temple was declared a nunnery. Thus, the monastery of the Holy Great Martyr Nedjelje became the sixth monastery and the first nunnery in the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Dalmatia. The proclamation of the Oćestovo monastery was attended by several thousand believers. [5] Today's abbot of the monastery is hieromonk Kirijak (Vranješević).
