From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

OBRA Incorporated (Filipino: Organisasyon ng Batikan at Responsableng Artista ng Bayan, lit. "Organization of the Best and Responsible Artists of the Nation") is a non-stock, non-profit cultural organization in the Philippines, established in 2007 by filmmaker Nash Ang.[1] The organization co-produced Seoul Mates (2014), which The Korea Times described as "the first Korea-Philippines co-produced feature film made by staff and actors from both countries."[1]

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas cited OBRA's founder for "upholding Filipino artistic excellence in the International Film Scene" when awarding him the Media Advocate Award in 2021.[2]

History

OBRA launched its first project, "theOBRAwebsite," an online forum for Filipino artists, in 2008.[3] In 2009, it established DancePinoy.com, a community platform for the Philippine dance scene with group directories, event listings, forums, and an internet radio station called Radyo Kalibre.[4]

In 2010, The Philippine Star reported that "OBRA Philippines' Nash Ang's entry won the grand prix" at the ASEAN-Korea Multimedia Competition for a video about the polluted Pasig River, selected from over 600 entries.[5]

Theater

In 2011, OBRA produced Filipina... Bakit Ikaw?, a stage play addressing social issues affecting Filipino women, including the abuse of Overseas Filipino Workers, human trafficking, and early pregnancy. Orange Magazine described it as "a more youthful take on presenting women's concerns without sacrificing the weight of issues and the quality of stage performance."[6]

Film production

OBRA Incorporated co-produced Seoul Mates (2014) with Samsong Entertainment Media Holdings. The film screened at the Cinema One Originals Film Festival in November 2014[7] and at Indiespace, an independent cinema in Seoul.[1]

Digital platforms

Pinoy Seoul

In 2017, OBRA launched Pinoy Seoul, a media portal for Filipinos in South Korea.[8] The Korea Times covered the portal's launch, reporting that Ang started it while working as an International Correspondent of the Seoul City Government.[9] In May 2019, the platform expanded with Pinoy Store, an e-commerce app selling Filipino products to migrant workers in South Korea.[10]

In December 2019, Pinoy Seoul received the Interactive Media Award – Best Website on Migration from the Commission on Filipinos Overseas.[11]

Pinoy California

In April 2020, OBRA launched the Pinoy California mobile application for Filipino Americans in California during the COVID-19 lockdowns.[12]

Korea Pinoy International Film Festival

In September 2019, Pinoy Seoul organized the inaugural Korea Pinoy International Film Festival (KPIFF), a three-day event at the Arirang Cinema Center in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. The Korea JoongAng Daily described it as "the first Filipino international film festival to be hosted in Korea." It screened 28 short and feature films under the theme of migration.[13] It was held in cooperation with the Philippine Embassy in Korea and the Seongbuk-gu Government.[14]

COVID-19 response

On Labor Day 2020, OBRA launched the "Work at Home" platform to help Filipino artists find remote freelance work during the pandemic. Philstar's Interaksyon reported that it was created in response to the enhanced community quarantine which left freelance workers without income.[15]
