ODAB-500P (ros. ОДАБ-500П) – Soviet fuel-air bomb weighing 500 kg.
History
At the end of the 70's the Soviet Air Forces introduced the fuel-air bomb ODAB-500. It was used during the Soviet–Afghan War, where it was realised that the explosive it was using - Ethylene oxide, despite its volatility, was unable to form the correct fuel-air cloud and, as a result only 15-50% of bombs worked as intended. Due to this, the development of a new fuel-air weapon started.
Description
The bomb has a thin-walled body which contains 145 kg of piperylene (1,3-pentadiene) and seven charges of a solid explosive material (weighing 23 kg in total). The explosion of the solid explosive charges creates a fuel-air cloud whose explosion is initiated with an additional fuze. Thanks to the use of a liquid explosive, the explosion of the bomb is nearly thrice as powerful as that of a conventional HE bomb of the same weight.
