"OK" is a song by the American singer Katy Perry from the deluxe edition of her seventh studio album, 143 (2024). An anthemic pop song, it was released on December 20, 2024, as part of the deluxe edition of the album, titled 1432. This featured four additional tracks, including "OK", which was later promoted as the album's fourth single in Italy. Critics lauded the song as an empowering anthem, specifically praising its infectious chorus and motivational lyrics.

Release

In April 2024, Katy Perry revealed that Canadian-Congolese singer Lu Kala "helped [her] write one of [her] biggest songs that has yet to come out but it’s coming out." Kala expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with Perry, stating that the experience "means the world" to her and that she "can’t wait for the world to hear it".[1][2][3][4]

"OK" was included as one of the new tracks in 1432, the deluxe edition of Katy Perry's 2024 album 143. The release was announced by Perry on social media on the day of release, December 20, 2024, with a message incorporating the deluxe track titles into it: "1432 is here, OK!"[5] On the same day, the song was distributed to Italian radio as a single.[6][7][8] This marked Perry's first collaboration with Dr. Luke since his highly publicized legal battles with singer Kesha, drawing criticism from fans and commentators.[9]

Composition

"OK" is an energetic[10] and anthemic[11] mid-tempo[12] pop[12] ballad[13] that starts off with a delicate acoustic guitar intro[11][14] before progressing into an uplifting chorus where Perry’s vocals are backed by a group chant.[11][12][15][14] The instrumental is led by an electric guitar.[16][17] The lyrics of the song are uplifting and address themes of hope, confidence, self-reliance and resilience: "I’m always gonna be around/No matter if you’re up or down."[10][11][18][15][19][20]

Reception

"OK" was received positively by critics, who described it as a powerful anthem of hope. They praised its infectious chorus and motivating message.

Rodrigo Garcinuño from Cadena 100 found the song's chorus very motivating, and called "OK" "a perfect song to start the [new year] thanks to its message of hope and its hymn to self-confidence."[18] Josh Sharpe from BroadwayWorld hailed the song's chorus as "infectious" and "inspirational", continuing how "the anthemic song exudes hope, celebrating personal growth and confidence as new ambitions crystalize and relationships are rejuvenated."[14] Italpress called the chorus "unforgettable", characterizing "OK" as an "anthem celebrating hope."[21] The Power Player Magazine highlighted the song as a standout that "shines bright", explaining how "the song captures the spirit of personal growth and rejuvenation, setting a hopeful tone for the new year."[22] On December 23, 2024, East Coast Radio wrote that the song is "already becoming a fan favorite" and "has been described as the perfect anthem to ring in the new year", while calling it motivational and "great for anyone going through a rough patch."[23] DailyNews called "OK" a special track, highlighting its "meaningful chorus that conveys warm inspiration to listeners."[24]

Steven James, a former American Idol contestant judged by Perry, went viral on TikTok for mocking "OK". He claimed "This can't be the same person that eliminated me", with his expressions showing that he dislikes the song.[25][26][27]
