OMT Lebanon

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

OMT or Online Money Transfer S.A.L.[1] is a Lebanon-based financial services company headquartered in Beirut, and a Western Union[2] accredited agent. It is the largest money transfer company in Lebanon in terms of network size and market share in its industry.

OMT operates through a network of 1000+ agent-owned locations spread throughout Lebanon[3], as well as 4 stand-alone locations, owned and managed by OMT.[4]

Alongside its local and international money transfer services, OMT provides a number of bank-related and governmental services which it was able to provide after signing agreements with several ministries.

OMT celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018.

History

OMT was founded in 1998, and registered on the Beirut Commercial Registry. It was one of the several initiatives taken by Lebanese businessmen to revive the depressed Lebanese economy after the end of the war.

OMT was the first Western Union accredited agent in Lebanon. This allowed OMT to expand its network and reach 500 locations by 2003, and sign its first governmental agreement with the Ministry of Telecommunications in 2004.

In 2012, OMT became the first company to offer local money transfers[5] without referring to an international company.

Operations

1- Services

Financial

Financial services vary between domestic and international. Locally, money can be transferred to bank accounts, businesses, NGOs, and individuals through Cash to Gov, Cash to Bank[6], and OMT Intra Money Transfer services[7]. International money transfers to Western Union locations around the world are available as well.

Governmental

After signing agreements with several ministries, OMT was able to provide the following governmental services: ID renewal[8][9], car plates registration, mechanic fees, PCH housing fees[10] and installments, water bills, municipality services fees[11], taxes, expat workers, and traffic tickets and violations.

2- Agreements and Contracts

Through the course of its 22 years of operating, OMT has signed agreements with governmental entities which allowed OMT to expand its list of services. These entities include Ministries of Finance[12], Telecommunications, Energy, Interior & Municipalities, and Labor, as well as Public Corporation for Housing[13], South Lebanon Water Establishment[14], and Establishment of the Water of Beirut & Mount Lebanon.

Corporate Social Responsibility

1.      Support of Local NGOs

Over the years, OMT has increased its support of local NGOs, including the White Land Foundation, and the Children Cancer Center of Lebanon[1].

OMT allows anyone to donate directly to the CCCL through money transfer without any charges. The CCCL provides free treatments and education to children with cancer in Lebanon and the region. All of these free services are financed from donations.

2.      Preventing Scam and Laundering

Scam and money laundering are the most common illegal acts OMT encounters. Customers are advised not to send money to people of unclear identity, or people they haven’t met in person in order to reduce the risk of being scammed. Money transfer activities are highly monitored so that any money laundering attempts may be debunked.
